MHS Invite to play host to state’s best in track

The Middletown boys and girls track teams will play host to the Middletown Invitation­al today and Saturday at Skubel-Rosek. Today’s meet is for freshman and sophomores and begins at 3 p.m. Saturday’s varsity meet starts at 1 p.m. for field events, 2 p.m. for track events.

The varsity meet, which carries qualifying times comparable to state qualifying times, will play host to 61 teams. Some of the top teams in the state will be represente­d, including Xavier. Bloomfield, Cheshire, Greenwich, Guilford, Hall, Hand, Hillhouse, Hartford Public, Staples, Wilbur Cross, and Windsor

Middletown athletes to watch at the meet include DeShaun Bradshaw, Garrett Dandridge and Nico Cavalieri, seeded 1, 2 and 6 in the 100 meters. Dandridge is seeded first in the 200 meters and the boys 4 x 100 team is seeded second. Veronica Meyer (2nd javelin and discus), Cromwell’s Andraya Yearwood (3rd, 200), Jaymin Torres (5th in 110 hurdles), DeAaron Lawrence (3rd in high jump, 4th in long jump, 10th triple jump), Nasharie Davis (5th 100 meter hurdles), Trevor Christie (Xavier, 5th, 800), Pierre Sylvain (Xavier, 6th in 400), Dylan Drescher (6th in javelin, 9th in discus).

The boys mile will have a lot of Middletown representa­tion with Xavier’s Owen Lally (2nd), William Curran (4th), Owen Curran (5th), Ryan Grochowski (9th), Dillon Selfors (10th) and Middletown’s Matt Lecky (12th) all seeded high. Xavier’s Peter Schulten and Robbie Cozean are seeded second and third in the 3200.

Admission for the event is $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and students.

Wesleyan to host NESCAC lacrosse championsh­ips

The Wesleyan men’s lacrosse team, defending NESCAC champion, will play host to the remaining rounds of the NESCAC championsh­ip on Jackson Field.

The top-seeded Cardinals will face No. 4 Williams in a semifinal Saturday, while No. 2 Amherst meets No. 3 Tufts in the other semifinal. The championsh­ip game will be played Sunday at noon.

Wesleyan (13-2), the top seed for the first time in program history, has won five straight games and advanced to the semifinals for the second straight year with a 16-11 win over No. 8 Bates.

The Cardinals own the top defense in the conference, allowing 8.63 goals per game.

Sophomore goalie Otto Bohan leads the league with a 7.67 goals against average and ranks second in save percentage (.565). He is 11-1 in 12 starts this season.

The attacking trio of junior Carter Hawthorne, rookie Ronan Jacoby and senior Harry Stanton are the top offensive threats for Wesleyan. Hawthorne has a team-leading 65 points and is tied for the league-lead in assists (49).

Jacoby's 46 goals rank fifth in the NESCAC and Stanton, Wesleyan's career leader in goals, has 43 goals and 51 points this season.

Jacoby was named the NESCAC Rookie of the Year, Bohan received AllNESCAC First Team recognitio­n, and Stanton, seniors Taylor Ghesquiere, Andres Rodriguez, and juniors Carter Hawthorne and Christian Barker were each named to theNESCAC Second Team.
