Law girls have improved each season since 2015

Since 2015, the Law girls have shown consistent improvement and thanks to experience and team work in 2018 that success has continued in the regular season.

In 2015, the Eagles finished 7-9-1 overall and in the postseason got as far as the CIAC Class M qualifying round. In 2016, the Eagles went8-8 in the regular season and ended up 8-9 with another appearance in the Class M qualifying round.

In 2017, the Eagles had an impressive 12-4 finish in the regular season and ended up 13-6 overall after advancing to the Class M quarterfinals.

This season, the Eagles are off to another solid regular season record at 11-3 (not including Tuesday’s game).

“I think the biggest reason for our success this year has been our unselfishness,” Law coach Lynette Marinez said. “Everyone on the team is happiest when the team is successful and the girls are not worried about individual success.

“Our biggest strength is sharing the ball and the work. If everyone is willing to put in the hard work, as a team we will see success. We only graduated three girls from last year, so the majority of the starting lineup returned and a number of underclassmen have really stepped up at different points this year.”

Another plus for the Eagles has been balanced scoring.

Among the top scorers are attack player Olivia Keator, who leads the team with 48 goals, 30 assists and she has also won 46 draw controls. Midfielders Laura Dennigan has 27 goals and has won 50 draw controls and Colleen Goodwin has 38 goals, 13 assists and has won 76 draw controls. Attack player Andria Torres is the top playmaker with 53 assists and 29 goals.

“The girls came into this season wanting to be better and do better than last season,” Martinez said. “So we came into this year looking to pick up right where we left off in 2017.

“We’ve been in a handful of close games in the last two weeks. We’re ready to take that experience into the post season and hopefully find some success (SCC tournament and Class M).”

MANY TEAMS ROLLING TOWARD POSTSEASON

As the regular season winds down, heading into Tuesday’s games many boys and girls teams were on a roll heading toward the postseason with impressive win streaks.

The top boys teams are a pair of unbeaten teams with Darien at 15-0 and New Fairfield at 14-0. Other boys teams on a roll are East Catholic (11-3) with an eight-game win streak and St. Bernard (12-1), also with an eight-game win streak. Granby (13-3) has won eight games in a row, Berlin (11-3) has won six games in a row and Windsor is on a fivegame win streak.

East Catholic (13-1) has the top win streak among girls teams. After a seasonopening loss, East Catholic has won 13 straight games. Cheshire (14-1) follows with a 10-game win streak and SCC rival Hand (12-2) is next with a nine-game win streak.

Greenwich (14-2) ended its regular season with a seven-game win streak. Teams on a five-game win streak are Newtown (11-5), Pomperaug (13-2) Weston (9-7).
