Blue Devils capture Shoreline crown

- By Joe Morelli

NEW BRITAIN — Ask Tyler Woodward the worst nine-hole score he shot this season and he comes up with it immediately: a 42 against Old Lyme.

That occurred during Coginchaug’s only loss in 15 regular-season matches. A chance to avenge that loss — and defend its league title — came Thursday.

Woodward may not have had his A game at Stanley Golf Course, but he was good enough to earn medalist laurels and lead Coginchaug’s successful defense of its Shoreline Conference championship.

“It’s good to go back-toback. Everybody was coming after us, so that was kind of a little motivator,” said Woodward, who shot a 3-over-par 74.

Kyle Roberts added a 79 for the Blue Devils, who finished with a cumulative total of 328, 11 strokes better than runner-up Portland. Cromwell and Old Saybrook tied for third (343) and Old Lyme placed fifth (347).

“Losing to Old Lyme shook things up a little bit,” Coginchaug coach Brian Dailey said. “They looked so focused today. They were ready to play a championship round of golf and they produced. It’s fantastic.”

This is Dailey’s first season as head coach and he knew full well he had “a top-notch championship team, a fantastic situation to walk into.” Roberts placed third in the Shoreline meet, Tom Vallone tied for sixth with an 83 and E,J.

Dzialo (92) and Justin Penney (93) finished 22nd and tied for 24th, respectively.

“To put five good scores out there, that’s what you

want, guys playing their best golf during the postseason. They were hungry,” Dailey said.

Coginchaug could contend in in the Division III state meet on June 4 at Tallwood CC. The Blue Devils finished tied for fifth

in Division IV last season.
