Seven gardens featured in June 9 tour

-

ESSEX — The Friends of the Essex Library will sponsor a garden tour on Saturday, June 9 that will feature seven private gardens in Essex.

Some are in the heart of Essex Village while others are hidden along lanes most visitors never see. While exploring, visitors will find a garden with European flavor, a hillside filled with native plants, a Japanese bonsai garden, aeroponically grown vegetables and views of the Connecticut River.

For many, the pleasant strolls may be enhanced by the opportunity to learn about various plants, for most of the garden owners will be on hand to point out specific features, offer gardening tips and answer questions.

Visitors will have an opportunity during the day to watch two design demonstrations, including the creation of a beautiful edible arrangement. These demonstrations will be located in the library program room in the afternoon.

While in the village, enjoy its quintessential New England charm with examples of early colonial and federal architecture among a unique blend of private residences, antique shops, specialty boutiques, an historic inn and marinas. Several restaurants are within walking distance of the gardens.

Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 the day of the event. Cash, checks, Visa or Master Card will be accepted, although cash or checks are preferred. Tickets can be reserved by calling the library at 860-7671560, by visiting the Essex Library or by completing a form included in flyers available at the library and throughout Essex. Completed forms may be mailed to the Essex Library. Confirmations will be sent to the email addresses on the completed forms.

A ticket will be a booklet containing a brief description of each garden along with a map of the tour and designated parking. Tickets must be picked up at the library beginning at 9:45 a.m. the day of the event.

On display in the library will be an assortment of items that every gardener would like to take home. These items can be won by purchasing chance tickets. The winning tickets will be drawn at 3 p.m. Winners do not have to be present for the drawing and will be notified by phone.

Library director Richard Conroy said, “The Essex Library receives only about half of its operating revenue from the Town. The financial assistance we receive each year from the Friends is critical. It enables us to provide important resources such as Ancestry.com and museum passes, as well as practical improvements to the building itself. I urge you to help your Library by helping our Friends make this event a success. Thank you for your support.”

The tour will take place rain or shine. For information call 860-767-1560. All proceeds will benefit Friends of the Essex Library.
