University of the South
SEWANEE, Tenn. — William Arthur Holley IV of New York, New York; was awarded a bachelor of arts degree in classical languages at the University of the South’s commencement May 13. Holley is the child of William Arthur Holley III of Higganum.
King’s College
WILKES-BARRE, Penn. — King’s College recently announced Jason Hoops of East Hampton qualified for the spring 2018 dean’s list. Hoops is a physician assistant major and 2016 graduate of Xavier High School in Middletown.
Elmira College
ELMIRA, N.Y. — Sarah Hughson of Moodus was among the graduates at the 160th Elmira College commencement June 2. Hughson was recognized for graduating magna cum laude.
Coastal Carolina University
CONWAY, S.C. — More than 2,000 Coastal Carolina University students were named to the dean’s list for the spring 2018 semester. Each has achieved a 3.5 GPA or higher during the semester. Middlesex County students are: Jack Bugg, a marketing pre-major of Clinton; Shane Fiala, an accounting major of East Haddam; Julia Flannery, a management pre-major of Moodus; and Erika Kidd, a finance pre-major of Old Saybrook.
CHET Dream Big
HARTFORD, Conn. —The statewide 2018 CHET Dream Big! Competition, which asks students to share their dreams about life after college through drawings and essays, selected 48 winners from across the state out of more than 3,000 entries. Winners were honored at a reception at the Connecticut Science Center June 1.
This year’s competition, which drew entries from schools in 92 of the state’s 169 municipalities, focused on the topic of equality, both gender and racial equality.
Four grand prize winners will each receive a $1,000 contribution to a CHET college savings account and 44 more, in kindergarten through eighth grade, will receive $500 contributions, including the following Middlesex County students:
Locals are: Eva Cohen, Macdonough Elementary School, Middletown; Evan Guilmette, Brownstone Intermediate School, Portland; Molly Kulas, Brewster Elementary School, Durham; Aiden Walsh, Valley View Elementary School, Portland.
Hamilton College
CLINTON, N.Y. — Claire V. Curran, daughter of Andrew and Jennifer Curran of Middletown, has been named to the dean’s list at Hamilton College for the 2018 spring semester. To be named, an undergrad must have carried throughout the semester a course load of four or more graded credits with an average of 3.5 or above. Curran, a rising junior majoring in French and sociology, is a graduate of Middletown High School.
Maine Maritime Academy
CASTINE, Maine — Maine Maritime Academy recently named 350 students to the dean’s list for outstanding academic achievement in the second semester of the 2017-18 academic year. Among them is Liam Flannery, a marine systems engineering major from East Hampton. Students must earn a GPA of 3.3 or above on a 4.0 scale.
Colby-Sawyer College
NEW LONDON, N.H. — Colby-Sawyer celebrated its 180th commencement May 5. Alexandra Danas of Middletown graduated with a bachelor of science degree in sport management. She was a member of the women’s basketball team.
Dean College
FRANKLIN, Mass. — Dean College announces the students who earned a place on the dean’s list for the spring 2018 semester: Nicholas Maturo of Middletown, Stephanie Sherman of Westbrook and Joshua Wasserman of East Haddam.
James Madison University
HARRISONBURG, Va. — James Madison University announces students who made the president’s list for the spring 2018 semester. They must carry at least 12 graded credit hours and earn a GPA of 3.900 or above. They are: Cromwell resident Megan Leigh Hunter, communication sciences & disorders; and Portland resident Alina Pantano, communication studies
ASIS&T Award of Merit
SILVER SPRING, Md. — The ASIS&T Award of Merit jury announces its 2018 awardee is Dr. Toni Carbo, who graduated from Middletown High School, went to Brown University on a full scholarship and grew up in Middlefield.
For over 40 years, Dr. Carbo has been “a national and international leader in our field, making valuable contributions in the areas of information policy, information ethics, inclusion, international relations, education and mentoring, and ASIS&T,” Dr. Diane Sonnenwald said in her nominating letter.
“We particularly note her impact on policy informing governments and government agencies, her contributions to discussions of information ethics, her numerous achievements over 16 years as dean of the iSchool at the University of Pittsburgh, her involvement with the Association of Library and Information Science Education, and the U.S. National Commission on Libraries and Information Science, being one of the founders of the iSchools organization, and her exemplary leadership and sustained Involvement in ASIS&T,” according to the press release.
Coastal Carolina University
CONWAY, S.C. — Nearly 750 students were named to the president’s list at Coastal Carolina University for the spring 2018 semester. Each must achieve a perfect 4.0 GPA during the semester to be honored. Among those were Dahlia Dehaan, a communication major from Middletown.
Governor’s Scholars
HARTFORD — Cromwell resident Maximillian Mueller, who attends Hartford Magnet Trinity College Academy, was selected as one of 22 of Connecticut’s top juniors designated as Governor’s Scholars. Sponsored by the Connecticut Association of Schools and Horace Mann, the program is meant to recognize academically talented junior high school students throughout the state. A panel selects a group for special recognition to the governor.
Students were honored at the 22nd annual Governor’s Scholars Luncheon at the Aqua Turf in Southington May 24. The majority of Connecticut’s colleges and universities also support this program by making gratis college-level courses available to the 22 scholars.
The Academic Excellence Scholarship will be awarded for each of four academic years (eight full semesters of undergraduate work) and the amount is $7,500 a year.
