2 earn highest grades in MHS Class of 2018
MIDDLETOWN — Two young women graduated Wednesday evening at the top of their class.
Rachel Gaudreau, daughter of Steven and Michelle Gaudreau of Holly Lane, Middletown, is the valedictorian of Middletown High School’s class of 2018. Throughout her high school career, Gaudreau has pursued the most demanding courses, taking all Advanced Placement and honors level classes, according to a press release.
She was elected to the National Honor Society during her junior year and is recognized as an Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction, earning scores over 3.5 on five Advanced Placement tests in 2017. In addition, she was awarded the Brown Book Award, Yale Book Award and State of Connecticut Concentrator. She has also been awarded the Highest GPA of Spring Athlete Award as well as being nominated for the Women in Engineering Award, the release continued.
At Middletown high, she is a member and vice president of the National Honor Society and Student Council. She is a four-year member of the Middletown Varsity Golf and Soccer teams, and participates in the Chemistry Olympiad and Unified Theater.
Gaudreau was a captain for Relay for Life and organized a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. She has also raised money for the I Am That Girl nonprofit organization, providing leadership, social, and personal development programs to girls in high school and college. She also organizes summer activities for children at her church, where she is also a counselor, according to MHS.
This fall, Gaudreau will attend Georgetown University, where she will major in biology.
Sarah Nguyen, daughter of Thanh and Jeannie Nguyen of Villa Street, is salutatorian of the Class of 2018. She is a disciplined academic who has excelled in many Advanced Placement and Honors Level courses, according to the press release.
Nguyen has been recognized as an AP Scholar with Distinction, an award granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.5 out of 5 on all Advanced Placement exams, and receive a score of 3 or higher on 5 exams or more. She also received a special scholarship awarded through the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program, and, during her junior year, received the Yale Book Award.
Nguyen has volunteered for many community events such as MHS parent-teacher conferences, 4-H Education Center, Feet to the Fire; Riverfront Encounter, and the Connecticut Music Educators Association Music Festival. She has also been an academic tutor for her peers.
She is a member of Wesleyan Upward Bound, Middletown High School Concert and Marching Band, the Math Team, and has participated in Chemistry Olympiad.
Nguyen will attend the University of Connecticut Storrs campus in the fall.
