CHESHIRE — A man who fired several shots in his home at the Country Village condominium complex Friday night was shot by Cheshire police, but the suspect’s injury was not life-threatening, State Police said Saturday.

According to a news release from the state police, the man is 29 years old and was charged in relation to a domestic disturbance at his home at 137 Fairway Drive. But police did not identify the man or the officer or officers who shot him. Police did not list the charges.

A neighbor, Matthew Gentile, said the suspect’s fiancee recently had a baby. “I met him a few times,” Gentile said. “He’s a good guy. We talked for about an hour. I think he has some anxiety problems.”

One of the neighbors said the man is a military veteran.

State police said Cheshire police responded to the home Friday at around 7:30 p.m. on the report of a domestic disturbance. They found the man armed with a handgun and had barricaded himself in the residence. He refused to comply with the commands of Cheshire police, state police said in the release.

“Through the course of the interaction, at least one Cheshire police officer discharged a duty weapon, striking the suspect at least one time,” state police said. “The suspect sustained a non-life-threatening injury and was transported to a local hospital. There were no reported injuries to the Cheshire police officers.”

At the request of the Cheshire police chief and the New Haven State’s Attorney’s Office, state police detectives from Central District Major Crime responded to the scene and assumed control of the officerinvolved shooting investigation, state police said.
