Avenue Groove launches summer of music

- By Jeff Mill

CROMWELL — The recreation department kicks off its summer concert series Wednesday evening.

The series, which includes four shows, will be held on successive Wednesday nights (excluding July 4) from June 27 to July 25 at Frisbie’s Landing’s Riverport Park. The music begins at 6:30 p.m.

As part of an effort to both attract more spectators and to make their evening even more pleasant, the recreation staff have lined up food trucks for each event. And, thanks to a permit from the police department, spectators will be able to bring beer or wine to the concerts as well, according to Recreation Director Scott Kieras.

The food trucks will begin serving food at 6 p.m., said Kieras, who encouraged residents to come out, bring a blanket or a chair, sit back, have something to eat and drink, all while listening to the music and watching the river flow by.

Wednesday’s band is Avenue Groove, which Recreation Department Executive Assistant Rosanne Krajewski described as “six very talented and dedicated musicians playing R&B/funk/dance music.”

“Known for being extremely ‘tight’ and having fantastic vocals, ‘Avenue Groove’ is very well-received wherever they perform. If you think they are just another cover band, think again,” Krajewski said.

The band is made up of Laura Noonan, lead vocals; Stephen King, keyboards/lead vocals; Rob Gottfried, drums/percussion; Peter DeFazio, bass guitar/lead vocals; Eric Della Veechia, saxophone/vocals; and David Zucker, guitar.

The group Fabio & Crew is scheduled to perform July 11.

The Coyote River Band will take the stage July 18.

“Connecticut’s premier modern country and pop/rock band, Coyote River Band performs modern country rock and pop music,” Krajewski said. They offer “stellar vocals, a tight-knit rhythm section and impassioned song renditions that will have the audience entertained for the entire show,” she added.

The series concludes July 25 with a performance by Big Deal Rock.

Rain dates are the following Thursday.
