Community made fireworks a success
On behalf of the Portland Fireworks Committee, we want to thank each of you for granting us permission to utilize the beautiful Portland High School site for this year’s fireworks display. It was such a pleasure to hold it at a location where we didn’t have to worry about flooding, parking, or disturb the nesting of the baby eaglets and herons.
It was a great opportunity to showcase this beautiful school facility to those in Portland, as well as out-of-town and state visitors, who had never been there. Many were pleasantly surprised when they saw the well-manicured fields that aren’t visible from the road. Being such a hot, humid day, it was so comfortable high on the hill with the cooling summer breeze.
We appreciate the cooperation and work of the school staff, including Carl Johnson, Linda and Wayne Martin, who tirelessly fulfilled all our needs. We were impressed how affable everyone was and how seamlessly they worked as a team. It was reassuring to have the gymnasium available in case the impending thunderstorms struck when the spectators were sitting on an open field.
Our gratitude and appreciation for the planning and commitment extends to the Portland Police, the CERT team, Fire Chief Bob Shea and his team of firefighters. Without their assistance, this event would not be possible. Portland is lucky to have dedication like this from so many employees.
After receiving rave reviews on the fireworks show as well as the new site, we are hopeful to continue this tradition at the High School for the 2019 Fireworks Extravaganza. Thanks to all!
