Chapman latest Yankee to land on disabled list

-

MIAMI — Another important Yankee has been added to the disabled list.

On Wednesday, the Yankees placed All-Star closer Aroldis Chapman on the 10-day DL due to a flare-up of tendinitis in his left knee. They also called up Chance Adams while announcing the claim of catcher Chris Rabago off of waivers.

Chapman has been managing the issue for most of this season, but it became unmanageable during Tuesday night’s 12th inning.

After throwing his sixth pitch of the night, Chapman — who walked the first batter he faced — signaled that something was wrong.

“The pain was just more than what I’ve encountered lately,” said Chapman via interpreter. “It’s worrisome.”

Chapman had an MRI exam on Wednesday. Dellin Betances, David Robertson and lefty Zach Britton are candidates to take over the closer’s job in Chapman’s absence.

Tommy Kahnle finished out the Yankees’ wild, 2-1 victory against the Marlins, ending on a caught stealing at second base when catcher Kyle Higashioka’s accurate throw survived a video replay challenge.

Manager Aaron Boone avoided using Robertson, who complained of right shoulder soreness after playing catch before Tuesday’s game.

But Robertson expected to be available for Wednesday’s series finale at Marlins Park.

Despite three days of rest leading into Tuesday, Robertson said, “I wasn’t quite 100 percent and I didn’t want to go out there and not be the guy they expected — even if it’s just a little sore spot.

“I know of all days it turned out to be this game and I wish I could’ve been there to help them out.”

Both Chad Green and A.J. Cole navigated out of none-out jams with the winning run on third base.

After the game, Boone acknowledged that the Yankees had put top lefty starting prospect Justus Sheffield in the bullpen at Class AAA Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre, with the idea of calling him up and boosting the Yanks’ bullpen down the stretch.

Adams or Sonny Gray could start on Saturday, when the Yankees play a doubleheader at Baltimore, Boone said.
