MIDDLETOWN — The Gallery/Shop at Wesleyan Potters will feature pottery by ceramic artists, Linda Sershen of Southington and Mary Bramble Scott of West Hartford.

Their work will be on display from Wednesday, Sept. 12 through Saturday, Oct. 20. An opening reception will be held Friday, Sept.14 from 5-7 p.m.

While the two artists approach ceramics from different angles, they share a love for glazing techniques and the effects the various methods produce.

“Glazing is, for me, the most creative part of the process,” Sershen said. “I’m always curious about how glazes interact. I like to think of clay as canvas.”

Her work is recognizable in the “painterly” look of much of her glazing and in “certain forms and shapes, such as wide, narrow-based bowls, tea bowls, and decorative wall art,” she said.

For Scott, “Clay has endless possibilities and challenges,” she said. “(I’m deeply intererted in) surface and in using texture, sculpting, drawing, and glaze techniques to bring interest to each piece.”

Having grown up in a family that daily used hand-crafted items, she sees each piece as an “artifact that tells part of the story, past and future, that form the arc of life.” She feels compelled to continue the family story, she said.

Sershen says she is inspired by the work of other potters, sculpture, and abstract painting.

“My shapes are sometimes a reach for grace and balance, and at other times, just creative fun,” she said.

On the other hand, Scott makes what she calls “functional ceramics, useful pieces that are part of our everyday lives” and that “add a sense of personal

expression, an awareness of quiet beauty.” Her work is influenced by nature and reflects the simplicity of the Arts and Crafts Movement.
