Sunny weather then storm’s last gasp

Connecticut may feel remaining effects Monday

- By Jim Shay

The weekend is looking sunny and warm after overcast skies registered most of last week.

According to the Northeast Regional Climate Center, there has been six days of measurable precipitation at Sikorsky Memorial Airport in Stratford.

Since last Saturday, Sikorsky has had 2.69 inches of rain. Danbury airport had 1.44 inches during the same period; Tweed-New Haven Airport received 1.81 inches.

The National Weather Service says high pressure centered over northern New England that moved in Friday will remain over the region through the weekend.

Sunshine will be more abundant Saturday, and temperatures will climb to slightly above seasonal normals, reaching into the lower 80s.

The NWS says Connecticut could see some remnants of Hurricane Florence — as much as up to an inch of rain — late Monday through Wednesday.

NWS said Florence, which moved into the Carolina coast early Friday, should turn toward the west-southwest through Saturday, then move generally northward across the western Carolinas and the central Appalachian Mountains early next week.

Remnants from Florence are expected to track northeast in Ohio and Pennsylvania by 2 a.m. Tuesday. Western New York and most of New England could feet some wind from the remnants Tuesday morning but probably will see its effects Wednesday.

“The wildcard will be how the remnants of Florence proceed,” the NWS said in its weather discussion.

Forecasters call for mostly cloudy skies Saturday with a high near 80 and a low around

62. Sunday will be sunny with a high near 78 and overnight lows around 63.

There is a 30 percent chance of rain after noon Monday, which will be mostly cloudy with a high near 77. The chance of rain increases to 50 percent Monday night with a low around 67.

By Tuesday, there is a 50 percent chance of showers day and night, with a high near 79 and an overnight low around

66.

On Wednesday, forecasters are calling for a 40 percent chance of showers on a day that is otherwise partly sunny with a high near 78.
