East Haven beats Hand for the first time

Freshman Emily Pycela’s second-half goal was all the East Haven girls soccer team needed to stun Hand 1-0 Saturday in a Southern Connecticu­t Conference game at East Haven.

This was the first time East Haven has ever defeated Hand in girls soccer.

Isabella Pilato assisted on Pycela’s eighth goal for the Yellowjack­ets (5-4-2). Angelina Munoz saved 16 shots to earn the shutout.

“What we wanted to prove was that we are a strong enough program to compete with anyone in the SCC,” East Haven coach Jake Hackett said.

Sacred Heart Academy 1, Law 0: Megan McMillen scored the game-winning goal and Mary Sarah Olson had four saves to lead Sacred Heart Academy to its SCC win. Jill Hall had 10 saves for the Eagles.

Shelton 9, Branford 0: Maggie Howard had two goals and an assist and Haley Oko and Lindsay Taylor added two goals each to lead the Gaels to an SCC win in Shelton. Mackenzie Joyce added a goal and two assists for the Gaels (10-0-1, 6-0). Macey Girard and Katelyn Robbins combined to make four saves for the Hornets (37-1)..

FOOTBALL

St. Lukes 31, Hopkins 0: Andrew Lau caught a 48-yard touchdown pass from Everett Anderson, kicked a 25-yard field goal and kicked four extra points to lead St. Lukes to their prep school win. Owen Sherman led the Hilltopper­s with 32 yards on eight carries.

BOYS SOCCER

Coginchaug 4, HaleRay 2: Tyler Woodward had two goals and an assist and Matt Taylor had five saves to lead the Blue Devils. Alex Ricard had five saves for Hale-Ray.

FIELD HOCKEY

Guilford 6, Hamden 0: Celia Mariconda had three goals and Hannah Tillier added three assists to lead the Indians to an SCC win. Julia DelGrego had 10 saves for the Green Dragons

Lyman Hall 3, North Haven 1: The Trojans got three second-half goals from Meredith DeNegris, Inhwa Ferretti and Megan Hosking for an SCC comefrom-behind win. Jackie Howlett scored in the first half to give the Indians a 1-0 lead. Sophie Aquaro had 10 saves for the Indians.

Old Saybrook 5, Woodstock Academy 0: Mandy Beck had a goal and two assists and Wendy Bowden had 13 saves to lead the Rams to their non-league win.
