Night Tree to perform Saturday

- By Mark Zaretsky

MADISON — Night Tree, the latest in a series of great, young acoustic acts brought to this area by the Fire in the Kitchen Concerts and Workshops series, will take the stage on Saturday in the North Madison Congregational Church.

“Night Tree represents exactly what’s so good about the modern acoustic music that’s happening right now,” Fire in the Kitchen organizer Charlie Shafer said in a news release. “It’s experimental, it’s diverse, it’s fringe, the punk rock of the string band world.

“That they play exceptionally well is a given, all being recent graduates of the New England Conservatory,” he said. “But their varied backgrounds make them impossible to classify, and inspiring and exciting to watch in action.”

When Night Tree performs, “a slow blues might veer off into rockabillly before it resolves into either a Celtic tune or a classical piece,” Shafer said. “A pop tune might evolve into modern jazz before hitting a Klezmer high note. There are so many things going on that it’s mesmerizing.”

Showtime is 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 for adults and $5 for kids of high school age and under. To reserve a spot, email workdog@mindspring.com or call Shafer at 203-668-3735.

The North Madison Congregational Church is at 1271 Durham Road in Madison.
