College students achieve honors
Hamilton College
CLINTON, New York — Elise Wilson of Deep River recently matriculated as a first-year student at Hamilton College. Wilson, a graduate of Valley Regional High School, was selected from a pool of 6,240 applicants to the college and joins a class of 482.
University of Vermont
BURLINGTON, Vermont — Ryan Lau of Middletown joined the University of Vermont honors college. Lau is one of 212 student to join the the class of 2022.
Eastern Connecticut State University
WILLIMANTIC — A number of civic-minded students from Eastern Connecticut State University are serving thousands of hours in the community this fall semester as student leaders with Eastern’s Center for Community Engagement. A student leader is an experienced student volunteer hired and trained by the CCE to recruit, train and manage volunteers, serve as a liaison with community partners, and plan and run service programs.
Among the student leaders is Jack Irvine ‘21 of Cromwell, who majors in elementary education and liberal studies. Irvine volunteers with United Way Readers at Natchaug Elementary and Natchaug Elementary After School Program.
Student leaders attend weekly community programs with their volunteers, as well as assist with volunteer recruitment and management for one-time special events. CCE Director Kim Silcox notes that student leaders are an integral part of the CCE staff.
