UNH holds off Assumption, holds on to top spot in NE-10

The New Haven football team remains in the driver’s seat in the Northeast-10 standings following a 27-21 win over Assumption in West Haven on Saturday. The Chargers (6-1 overall, 6-0 NE-10) built a 27point lead and held off a second-half charge to hand the Greyhounds (5-2, 5-1 NE-10) their first conference loss.

Quarterbac­k Ajee Patterson was 15 of 21 passing for 241 yards and four touchdowns.

Patterson connected on a pair of second-quarter scores with wide receiver Ju’An Williams, the first from 9 yards out and the second from 25 yards out. In between, he hooked up with Chris Carlyle on a 63-yard touchdown strike.

Joe Caico capped the scoring for the Chargers with a 3-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter.

Assumption proceeded to score the next 21 points on a pair of touchdowns runs from Doug Santos sandwiched around a 4yard touchdown pass from Cody Williams to Deonte Harris. The Greyhounds had one final possession with 32 seconds remaining, but Shawn Tafe came up with the intercepti­on for New Haven as time expired to seal the win.

Williams led the Chargers’ receivers with 94 yards on four catches. Ryan McCarthy piled up 131 yards on the ground on 20 carries.

New Haven and LIU Post are tied atop the NE-10 standings at 6-0 in conference play. They meet on the final week of the season on Nov. 10 in Brookville, N.Y.
