Live jazz, rock music featured this weekend

MIDDLETOWN — The Buttonwood Tree Performing Arts Center, 605 Main St., Middletown, has scheduled a number of shows this weekend and beyond. Tickets are required and reservatio­ns are encouraged. Visit www.buttonwood.org or call 860-347-4957.

Tonight: Art reception for Rosie Warren, 6-8 p.m. Compliment­ary refreshmen­ts. WArren is a self-taught UK-born artist with a focus on abstract style. As a full-time engineer, she spends most nights and weekends focusing on her artwork. A majority of her art features soft brush strokes overlaid with bolder colors. The images are not obvious, leaving it up to the viewer to use their imaginatio­n.

Friay: Latin American quartet Vagabond Bandido, 8 p.m. Vagabond Bandido is singer/songwriter Arlene Wow’s new adventure in expressing her Cuban heritage through music. Her original compositio­ns in English and Spanish are a fusion of Latin and American textures. Her quartet is comprised of seasoned song weavers, Ron Murray (guitar), Mark Gehret (bass) and Kevin Salley (percussion).

Saturday: Classic rock withThe Dr. Steve Band, 8-10 p.m., $10. The Dr. Steve Band is four fine musicians offering one of a kind, original music noted for catchy grooves and unique, surprising lyrics. They emphasize groove, scintillat­ing lead guitar, catchy percussion and bass lines. Dr. Steve is fronted by Steven Prasinos. Singer/Songwriter, Psychologi­st, Science Fiction Author. The Dr. Steve Band also includes Mike Gieralt on lead guitar, Gary Gieralt on bass and Eugene Zampieron on percussion. Formerly The Whatever Band, the group has won slots at various festivals including the Connecticu­t Folk Festival, the Bumblebee Festival and the Woodbury Fall Festival. The Dr. Steve Band has also been featured on VSCTV and WPKN and played at many restaurant­s and pubs throughout the area.

Sunday: NEAR and Far Storytelle­rs “Tellabrati­on, 3-5 p.m. $20. Reservatio­ns are suggested. Every November, thousands of tellers and listeners gather on every continent except Antarctica to enjoy the oral tradition…and it started right here in Connecticu­t. Featured storytelle­rs will be Lorraine Hartin-Gelardi, Carolyn Stearns and Jim Harriman who will present an eclectic range of stories.

Monday: Anything Goes Open Mic (with Moments of Gratitude), hosted by Ashley Hamel, 7-10 p.m.

Nov. 23: Kitty Kathryn and The Jazz Professors, 8 -10 p.m. $15. Kitty Kathryn, a local singer who has traveled the world performing her perfect pitch jazz songs. She’ll tell stories and share bits of her stellar career. Performing together since 1967, Kitty and the Professors perform Modern, Progressiv­e and Blues Jazz, including the standards. They welcome requests from all ages. You might remember Kitty from her days playing the Monte Green Inn with Dr. Herbert Levine.
