SCSU volleyball wins NE-10 title

The Southern Connecticu­t State volleyball team swept American Internatio­nal College, 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-18), in the Northeast-10 championsh­ip game on Saturday in Garden City, N.Y. for the first conference title in program history.

Alyssa Gage was named the tournament‘s Most Valuable Player while Gage and Leanna Jadus were named to the 2018 NE10 All-Tournament Team.

Gage had 14 kills, 11 digs and a block and two aces to lead the Owls. Gabriela Vazquez added 13 kills and three blocks while Jadus had eight kills and nine digs in the championsh­ip match. Kailyn O’Neal had 31 assists.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Southern Connecticu­t 74, Post 64: Jessica Fressle had 22 points, five rebounds and three steals to lead the Owls in their season opener at Harvey Hubbell Gymnasium in Bridgeport. Kiana Steinauer added 18 points, 14 rebounds and four steals for the Owls.

New Haven 64, Bridgeport 31: Camryn DeBose had 19 points, eight rebounds and four steals to lead the Chargers to their win in the Bridgeport Conference Crossover Classic in Bridgeport. Micah Wormack added 17 points for the Chargers.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

Rensselaer 2, Yale 1: Blake Orosz scored the game-winning goal at 19:32 of the third period to lead Rensselaer to its ECAC Hockey win in Troy, N.Y. Sabrina Repaci gave Rensselaer a 1-0 lead at 12:07 of the first period. Jordan Chancellor scored for Yale to tie the game at 1 at 17:45 of the second period. Gianna Meloni had 22 saves for the Bulldogs.

MEN’S SOCCER

Yale 1, Princeton 0: corner kick from Nicky Downs ricocheted off a Tiger defender and found its way to Paolo Carroll who finished the opportunit­y from point-blank range to put the Bulldogs ahead 1-0 at 48:25. Tom Wallenstei­n had four saves for the Bulldogs (7-6-3, 2-3-2).

Quinnipiac 46, Notre DameColleg­e 5: No. 3 seed Quinnipiac dominated from start to finish as the Bobcats cruised to victory in the NIRA Quarterfin­als in Hamden. The Bobcats advanced to their fourth consecutiv­e NIRA semifinal where they will face No. 2 seed Harvard for the third time this season. Emily Roskopf scored the first and last tries of the game, Allison Koenig and Margot Vella each had back-to-back tries and Mikah Maples also had a pair of tries.

MEN’S BASKETBALL LATE FRIDAY

Yale 76, California 59: At Shanghai, China, Miye Oni scored 12 of his 16 points in the second half and Azar Swain also had 16 points to help Yale beat California in the Pac-12 China game at the Baoshan Sports Center.

Alex Copeland scored 11 and Jordan Bruner had nine points and eight rebounds for Yale (1-0).

Swain hit a 3-pointer that gave Yale the lead for good midway through the first half and sparked a 15-0 run that made it 23-9 with 5:51 left before the break. Cal (0-1) trailed by double figures the rest of the way.
