Hand boys soccer team keeps three-peat hopes alive

Lee Wildermann had a goal and two assists for the third-seeded Hand boys soccer team, which kept its hopes for a three-peat alive with a 5-2 win over No. 22 Bristol Central Saturday in a Class L state quarterfin­al game at Madison.

Trey Doktorski, Scott Testori, Spencer Hartmann and Grayson McGeary also scored for the Tigers, who advance to Wednesday’s semifinals against Wethersfie­ld.

No. 17 Maloney 2, No. 8 Branford 1: Denis Blandon scored with 3:42 left in regulation to lead Maloney to the semifinals after winning this quarterfin­alround game at Branford.

Zach Smith scored in the first half for the Spartans (10-4-5). Raffaele Ciarleglio scored in the seocnd half for the Hornets (14-5-2), who advanced to the quarterfin­als for the second straightr season.

CLASS S

No. 4 Morgan 3, No. 12 Canton 1: David Saturno jad a goal and an assist as Morgan scored three times in the final 8 minutes to keep hope alive for a repeat in a quarterfin­al-round game at Clinton.

Carter Skidmore and Zach Tuccitto also scored for the Huskies. Jackson Miner scored in the first half for Canton.

CROSS COUNTRY

Xavier finishes third at NE meet: Anchored by junior Robbie Cozean and senior Dillon Selfors, Xavier finished third at the New England Championsh­ips in Manchester, New Hampshire with 111 points. La Salle Academy of Rhode Island won the title with 49 points and Bishop Hendricken was second with 80.

Hall of West Hartford was fourth with 169 points, Staples was fifth (193) and Suffield was sixth (208).

Cozean finished ninth in 16:14.6 and Selfors was 10th in 16:15.1. Senior Trey Cormier of Hall won the race in 15:56 and beat crosstown rival Conard freshman Gavin Sherry (15:57).

In the girls race, Kate Wiser of Pomperaug won in 18:04.1. Mari Noble of Greenwich was fourth in 18:51.6, Claire Daniels of New Milford was seventh in 18:57.3 and Meredith Bloss of Guilford was 33rd in 19:44.1.

Champlain Valley (Vt.) won the team title with 79 points, La Salle Academy (RI) was second (149) and Immaculate was third (187).

NEPSTA Championsh­ips: Hopkins finished fifth in both the boys and girls race at Byfield, Massachuse­tts.

Maliya Ellis finished fifth for the Hilltopper­s in the girls race. Nic Burtson placed seventh in the boys race. Charlie Mason and David Judd placed 10th and 11th, respective­ly. All four runners earned All-NEPSTA laurels.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

No. 10 Amity 3, No. 2 Cheshire 2: The fourth time was the charm as Amity rallied twice to knock off undefeated Cheshire 29-31, 25-22, 14-25, 25-18, 15-11 in the quarterfin­als at Cheshire.

Cheshire (22-1) rallied to beat Amity in five to win the SCC tournament title last Saturday after sweeping the two regular-season matchups. The Spartans (19-6) now face Westhill in Wednesday’s semifinals at a site and time to be determined.

Amity was the only team to even take a set off Cheshire this season.

FOOTBALL

Haddam-Killingwor­th 42 Old Saybrook/Westbrook 12: Tobey Callender rushed for 206 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries, and Dalton Modehn scored two touchdowns and rushed for 163 yards on 13 carries in the Pequot Conference win for the Cougars (8-1) over the Rams (4-4). Danny Almada scored both touchdowns for OSW.
