KEEP AN EYE ON

Remember me?: The date was Feb. 18, 2012 — and Shenneika Smith drained the shot that shocked a state.

Smith, now in her first year as an assistant coach at St. John’s, was a junior the last time her alma mater beat UConn. It was her 3-pointer that landed the Red Storm a 57-56 win at Gampel Pavilion, snapping then-No. 2 UConn’s 99-game home court winning streak. Up to that point, the Huskies also had won 171 straight games against unranked opponents.

Overall, UConn leads the series with St. John’s 40-17, with most of those matchups coming when both schools were members of the Big East.

A two-time All-Big East forward, Smith went on to play two seasons in the WNBA with the New York Liberty and Connecticut Sun.

England on point: After sitting out the entire 2016-17 season with a torn ACL in her left knee, Tiana England recovered to have a strong freshman campaign. The Stamford native averaged 9.4 points, 5.0 assists (team-high) and 3.1 rebounds per game, earning her a unanimous selection to the Big East AllRookie team.

If three games are any indication, England is poised to be even better this year. She narrowly missed a double-double in the Red Storm’s 68-62 victory over Purdue on Thursday (14 points and nine assists) and leads the Big East with 8.3 helpers a game.

“I saw gaps (in the defense), so I was able to attack,” England said following the win.

Fun in paradise: The Huskies are 7-0 all-time in the Paradise Jam, with all their victories decided by double-digits. They previously competed in the tournament in 2007 and 2012.
