Providence rallies past Quinnipiac to win Nutmeg Classic

Hayley Lunny scored a pair of third-period goals as Providence rallied past Quinnipiac for a 2-1 win in the championsh­ip game of the Nutmeg Classic at Ingalls Rink on Saturday.

Kate MacKenzie gave Quinnipiac (4-8-3) the early lead with a first-period goal.

Lunny evened the game with a power-play with just under 12 minutes remaining for ninthranke­d Providence (12-2). She added the go-ahead goal a little over 6 minutes later.

UConn 1, Yale 0: At New Haven, Viki Harkness broke a scoreless tie with just over 6 minutes remaining to give the Huskies the win in the consolatio­n game of the Nutmeg Classic at Ingalls Rink.

Samantha Carpenter-Yelle made 28 saves to post the shutout for UConn (7-8-1). Tera Hoffman made 21 saves for Yale (2-8).

MEN’S BASKETBALL

New Haven 74, Concordia 70: At West Haven, Elijah Bailey led four Chargers in double figures with 21 points.

Kessly Felizor added 13 points for UNH (4-0), while Roy Kane, Jr. had 11 points and Derrick Rowland finished with 10, including a couple of key free throws late in the fourth quarter.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

No. 21 Missouri 65, Quinnipiac 51: At Estero, Fla., Sophie Cunningham scored 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, Amber Smith also had a double-double and No. 21 Missouri beat Quinnipiac in the consolatio­n semifinals of the Gulf Coast Showcase.

Jen Fay led Quinnipiac (2-3) with 14 points and eight rebounds.

Quinnipiac was just 6-of-32 shooting (18.8 percent) in the first half, with four makes from 3point range. The Bobcats were held to nine points in the second quarter and trailed 37-22 at the break. Quinnipiac started the fourth quarter on a 9-0 run to pull to 49-40.
