David Walter Ives, a Portland and Essex, CT man, was born on December 1, 1941 and passed away on January 8, 2018 following a long illness with Alzheimer’s disease. David graduated from Portland High School and placed in the top three in New England during his apprentice­ship as a tool and die maker. He went on to own and operate Ives Tool Company, Inc. for more than three decades. David specialize­d in manufactur­ing prototypes, parts and inventions, many of which included contributi­ons to his country. David lived a full life pursuing diverse interests. He was a member of the Audubon Society and a lifetime member of the Grafton Historical Society, Vermont. He was an avid golfer, long standing member of several golf leagues and participat­ed in several charitable tournament­s. David was fortunate to attend the Masters and several U.S. Opens. Always a boating enthusiast, David loved when he and Susan lived aboard their “Great Escape” on Long Island. He also enjoyed restoring and showing his antique 1962 Chevy Corvette. David recently received his 50-year Mason’s membership pin presented by the Grand Lodge of Connecticu­t. He was also honored to be the recipient of the Pierpont Edwards Medal in recognitio­n of his service to the Masons, his family, country, community and numerous civic organizati­ons. David led a life of achievemen­t, self-sacrifice and commitment. He will be missed. David leaves behind his loving wife Susan Nyman Ives, his devoted Alea and Kevin Wall family, several nieces and nephews, one daughter, Leslee Hill, her husband and their two children. Family and friends are invited to visit with his family on Friday (Jan. 18th) from 5 to 6 p.m. at Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver St., Middletown. Funeral services will begin at 6 p.m., followed by a Masonic Ritual at 6:30 p.m. Burial will be in Burr Cemetery, Higganum.
