Road race street closures announced

Motorists should plan alternate routes from 6 to 9 p.m.

MIDDLETOWN — City officials are alerting the public to potential traffic delays as well as street closures during today’s annual Citizens Bank 5K Summer Fun Run.

The event, run by JB Sports, will take place from 6 to 9 p.m., resulting in several road closures in the downtown area. Main Street will be closed between Dingwall Drive and Court Street from 3 to 9 p.m., according to a press release from the Middletown Police Department.

This familyorie­nted festival and road race is sponsored by Citizens Bank, the City of Middletown, Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Business District, YMCA and Oddfellows Playhouse. It will feature Oddfellows street performers, Artfarm’s Circus for a Fragile Planet, a moonwalk, giant slide and more.

Live music will be provided by the Run for Cover band, the release said.

The schedule of events is: 4:30 p.m., packet pickup and registrati­on begins; the bed race first heat begins at 6; at 6:30, the halfmile kids fun run will take place; and at 6:40, the 5K will step off. It will be followed by the bed race semifinals at 6:45 p.m.

From about 6 to 8 p.m., the following roads will be closed: Main Street between Dingwall Drive and Union Street, High Street between Church and Washington streets, Cross Street between Long Lane and Pine Street, Vine Street, William Street, Knowles Avenue and Washington Terrace.

Motorists are asked to use alternate routes if passing through this area.
