Surging Aces have won five straight

-

NEW YORK — Kayla McBride’s eyes light up when talking about the Las Vegas offense.

With the addition of 6foot8 Liz Cambage in the offseason to join 65 A’ja Wilson in the Aces’ frontcourt, her life on the court as a shooter has gotten much easier.

“Liz and A’ja command so much attention that I’m getting a lot of good looks,” McBride said. “We have so many weapons that it makes it tough for defenses to stop us.”

McBride has helped the Aces average 80 points a game — third best in the league. She’s averaging 15.4 points while shooting a careerbest 48% from the field, including 46.8 from behind the 3point line.

Las Vegas has won five straight games and vaulted to the top of the WNBA standings. The team also has moved to No. 1 in the power poll for the first time in franchise history.

SPARKS GUARD WILLIAMS SUSPENDED

The WNBA has suspended Los Angeles Sparks guard Riquna Williams 10 games for a domestic violence incident.

The WNBA handed down the suspension Tuesday. Williams was arrested on April 29 and charged with two felony counts, one involving the assault of an individual with whom she was in a relationship and the other involving a threat to another person with a firearm. Her criminal case is ongoing.

The league conducted its own investigation and consulted with a panel of experts in the field of domestic violence. Among other factors, the WNBA said it took into account the nature and seriousness of the allegations, including the involvement of a gun.

The WNBA also will require Williams to participate in counseling. Williams’ suspension will begin with Thursday’s game against the Dallas Wings.

POWER POLL

A look at this week’s WNBA poll:

1. Las Vegas (115): The Aces swept a threegame road trip, winning two close games. They head out to Seattle Friday before finishing off the first part of season with two home games.

2. Connecticut (116): After hitting a rut, the Sun have won their last two games and host two games before the AllStar break. Connecticut is 71 at home this season.

3. Washington (96): Elena Delle Donne has been out with a broken nose and the Mystics have struggled, dropping three straight. Washington hopes the AllStar captain will be back soon.

4. Minnesota (107): The Lynx have been playing stellar defense all season, second best in the league allowing 73.3 points a game.

5. Los Angeles (97): With Candace Parker sidelined with an ankle injury, the Ogwumike sisters have picked up the scoring load for the Sparks.

6. Seattle (108): After a couple of days off, the rejuvenated Storm returned to action and dominated opponents. The Storm finished off their home stretch with easy wins over Dallas and New York.

7. Chicago (98): The Sky cap off first part of season with home games against Indiana and Atlanta.

8. Phoenix (78): Diana Taurasi played her first game of the season in Connecticut after missing the Mercury’s first 13 contests with a back injury. It was shortlived return as she missed Phoenix’s next game though and her status is unclear.

9. New York (710): It was a disappointing road trip for the Liberty, who weren’t very competitive against either Chicago or Seattle.

10. Atlanta (511): The Dream had their modest twogame winning streak end in an overtime loss to Los Angeles. Coach Nicki Collen has the team playing better this month after a horrendous start to season.
