A disregard for our laws at the border

- By Susan Pineau Susan Pineau lives in Shelton.

I’m writing in response to the oped column in Saturday, July 20’s edition.

In typical lawyerly fashion, writer Bethany Berger lobs a cleverly worded but specious accusation and then tries to impress us all with her knowledge of historical case law regarding the Supreme Court and then has the nerve to finish with a statement regarding the rule of law. That last bit is quite ironic given that people who sneak into our country show a complete disregard for the rule of law the second they set foot on our soil.

She claims that President Trump is trying to “add” a citizenship question to the census. If she was being honest, she would state, more accurately, that he is trying to restore the citizenship question that has been on every census in one form or another since 1820. Rather disingenuous of her, no? She also fails to mention that the citizenship question was surreptitiously removed from the census in 2010 by, none other than the left’s darling Obama (builder of cages, Deporter in Chief ). Anyone wonder why? Part of his “fundamental transformation” of our country, perhaps?

The reason for the census is to enable the federal government to understand the makeup of the legitimate, legal population for purposes of the distribution of federal monies and the accurate distribution of congressional seats. When the population is counted to include illegal as well as legal residents, the money and congressional representation are artificially skewed in favor of areas with larger numbers. Gee, I wonder who would be in favor of that? Could it be the party of politicians who encourage illegal immigration through sanctuary policies, free tuition, amnesty from prosecution for heinous crimes and the bestowal of medical and social benefits (at taxpayer expense)? But why would they do that, you ask? To accumulate power, plain and simple. The beneficiaries of their largesse (at your expense) tend to stay where they are most amply financially accommodated and are joined by more and more illegals who further inflate the population and so on.

In prioritizing illegal immigrants, they demonstrate their utter disregard for the suffering of U.S. citizens who are disabled veterans, homeless families, working poor, people in need of mental health services, etc. There’s only so much money to go around and if it’s spent supporting illegals, it can’t be spent elsewhere. Basic economics, folks.

They don’t care about citizens who are killed, raped or otherwise victimized by illegals by the thousands each year. They rail on with false outrage about illegals separated from their families (which is as a result of their own criminal actions, by the way) but turn a blind eye to U.S. citizens permanently separated from their loved ones by illegal alien criminals and predators, many of whom are multiple deportees emboldened by the lack of prosecution for their previous offenses.

They don’t care about the impact to hardworking Americans of having to bear the financial burden.

They don’t care that open borders are terrorists’ dreams.

They don’t care about the affront to legal immigrants who came here, waited their turn, followed the rules and went through the arduous process to become citizens and swear their allegiance to the greatest nation the earth has ever known.

They don’t even care that well over 60 percent of the population is firmly against illegal immigration. They only care about accumulating political power and empire building to keep it. They demonstrate every single day that they are firmly on the side of those who flout our laws, storm our borders while waving the flags of those very nations they claim they need asylum from, and start denigrating our country and demanding things the second they get here. They declare it in their speech and confirm it in their actions.

Wake up, people, the left wants power and they’ll do whatever they have to in order to get it. And, by the way, don’t be naive enough to think that they’ll use it to help you once they have it. History has proven otherwise.
