MIDDLETOWN — This week, two of the top philanthropy trade media publications released their annual rankings of America’s charities.

United Way Worldwide was ranked No. 1 in The Chronicle of Philanthropy list of America’s Favorite Charities and The NonProfit Times’ NPT 2019 Top 100. It shows that we maintained the top ranking in public support, despite a slip from No. 3 to Nov. 5 in total revenue.

Both publications base their rankings on varying revenue formulas, but they share a focus on U.S.based donations and other types of income in their calculations.

While the methodology behind the two lists may differ, the undeniable takeaway from both is that United Way Worldwide remains the mission of choice for everyday people — and many of America’s largest corporations — who want to support stronger communities and help those in need.

They show this support through their generous gifts of money and time. Change doesn’t happen alone, so we are grateful for this vital support that enables us to make it happen.

Middlesex United way is part of a worldwide network in 40 countries and territories, including more than 1,800 local organizations in the United States. United Ways are creating opportunities for a better life for all by focusing on key impact areas of education, health and financial stability.

Here in Middlesex County, we take on an additional focus on housing, as we feel having a safe place to reside is an essential step toward financial, educational and health progress.

While Middlesex United Way is part of a large worldwide network, I should remind you that your donations to Middlesex United Way stay local. Only 1 percent of funds raised go to United Way Worldwide. In this network, we benefit from strategic direction, support, expertise, sharing, marketing and more, so that we can do the best job locally to have the greatest impact.

We are also governed locally, and decisions are made locally on how best to create change in Middlesex County.

Right here in Middlesex County, we are dedicated to efficiency and effectiveness — and we are proud to be part of a worldwide network with a commitment to these same standards.

Know that when you make a gift to United Way, your money is used for the most important needs in Middlesex County, and we are continuing to see positive results. We know you want to feel good about what you give, and we hope you know we appreciate your commitment.

In light of this recognition of United Way programs, we are energized to continue serving the community to create lasting partnerships that drive longterm change in education, health, housing and financial stability.
