Western New England University

SPRINGFIEL­D, Mass. — The Western New England University chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society welcomed 62 Arts and Science students at the annual induction ceremony, which took place on November 1 in Rivers Memorial Hall on the University campus.

Founded in 1924, Alpha Lambda Delta is a national honor society for first year students that encourages and recognizes superior academic achievemen­t. Acceptance is based on attaining a minimum grade point average of 3.50 in their first semester of study or a 3.50 cumulative average at the end of the first year.

Independen­t Day School

MIDDLEFIEL­D — The Independen­t Day School recognize the following Middletown students for their academic achievemen­ts in the third trimester of the 201819 academic year. Seventh grader Elise Kennedy achieved high honors while the following students achieved honors: sixth graders Charlotte Iannucci, Henry Kennedy, and Shrikar Mutalik, seventh graders Sam Auclair, Aiden Butler, Emma Lemieux, Josey Pestel, Tracy Reynolds, Oskar Ruser, and Shiaowei Zurlo, and eight graders Gordon Culton and Avery Santos.

SkillsUSA Championsh­ips

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Career and technical students in your area won one of the nation’s highest awards at the 2019 SkillsUSA Championsh­ips, held in Louisville, Ky., on June 2627, 2019. More than 6,500 students competed at the national showcase of career and technical education. The SkillsUSA Championsh­ips is the largest skill competitio­n in the world and covers 1.4 million square feet, equivalent to 20 football fields or 25 acres.

Students were invited to the event to demonstrat­e their technical skills, workplace skills and personal skills in 103 handson competitio­ns including robotics, automotive technology, drafting, criminal justice, aviation maintenanc­e and public speaking. Industry leaders from 600 businesses, corporatio­ns, trade associatio­ns and unions planned and evaluated the contestant­s against their standards for entrylevel workers. Industry support of the SkillsUSA Championsh­ips is valued at over $36 million in donated time, equipment, cash and material. More than 1,100 industry judges and technical committee members participat­ed this year.

⏩ The following student received a SkillsUSA Championsh­ips medal and Skill Point Certificat­e — Ian Mannings, from Middletown and a student at Vinal Technical High School (Middletown), was awarded the high school bronze medal in CNC Milling Specialist.

University of Connecticu­t

BATON ROUGE, La. — Christen Teskey of Clinton was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective alldiscipl­ine collegiate honor society. Teskey was initiated at University of Connecticu­t.

U.S. Army

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Nathan T. Ingebretse­n graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San AntonioLac­kland.

The airman completed an intensive, eightweek program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Ingebretse­n is the son of Robin G. Muszynski and

Ted C. Ingebretse­n of East Haddam.

He is a 2007 graduate of Nathan Hale Ray High School, East Haddam, Conn. He earned a bachelor’s degree in 2012 from the University of Maine, Machias, Maine.

New York Institute of Technology

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. — Emily Hunter of Cromwell was among 2,769 students who received degrees as graduates of the New York Institute of Technology Class of 2019. Hunter’s MS degree is in Physician Assistant Studies.

Florida Institute of Technology

MELBOURNE, Fla. — Alec Russo of East Hampton has been named to the Spring 2019 Dean’s List at Florida Institute of Technology.

To be included on the Dean’s List, a student must complete 12 or more graded credits in a semester with a semester grade point average of at least 3.4.

WORCESTER, Mass. — The following local residents were among 1,598 students from Worcester Polytechni­c Institute named to the university’s Dean’s List for academic excellence for the spring 2019 semester.

Rochester Institute of Technology

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester Institute of Technology conferred some 4,200 degrees this academic year at all its campuses—including in Croatia, Dubai, Kosovo and China. The university held its 134th annual commenceme­nt celebratio­n in May. The following local residents received degrees:

Kathryn Cyr of Westbrook received a BS in biomedical engineerin­g in December 2018.

Le Moyne College

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Joseph Vail, a Junior Management and Leadership major from Cromwell, has been named to the Dean’s List at Le Moyne College for the Spring 2019 semester. To make the list, students must achieve a GPA of 3.5 or above.

Emma Pellegrino, from East Hampton, recently graduated from Le Moyne College with a Bachelor of Science in Biology May 19.

BURLINGTON, Vt. — Matthew Shelto of East Hampton, has been named to the Champlain College President’s List for the Spring 2019 semester.

Students on the President’s List have achieved a grade point average of 4.0 or higher during the semester. Shelto is majoring in Computer Informatio­n Technology.

Anya Delventhal of East Haddam was named to the Champlain College Trustee’s List for the Spring 2019 semester.

Students on the Trustee’s List have achieved a 4.0 grade point average for two or more consecutiv­e semesters.

Bates College

LEWISTON, Maine — Bates College graduated 469 students from 36 states and 36 countries on May 26, 2019. Cumulative­ly, the Class of 2019 performed 80,000 hours of community service, exemplifyi­ng Bates’ commitment to community learning and civic action.

Lauren Brough, of Killingwor­th, graduated after majoring in sociology and minoring in music. Brough, the child of Mr. and Mrs. Christophe­r D. Brough of Killingwor­th, is a 2015 graduate of Haddam Killingwor­th High School.

Brough was also inducted into the Bates ScholarAth­lete Society, an organizati­on which honors graduating seniors who have achieved a grade point average of 3.5 or have received special nomination from the faculty for outstandin­g academic achievemen­t in their junior and senior years, and who have participat­ed in a varsity sport for a minimum of three years.

Anna Esposito, of Killingwor­th, graduated after majoring in psychology. Esposito, the child of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas J. Esposito of Killingwor­th, Conn., is a 2015 graduate of Loomis Chaffee School.

Caddie Academy

GOLF, Ill. — This summer, 85 high school females from 13 states, including Middletown resident Camille Kennedy, will participat­e in the Western Golf Associatio­n’s eighth annual Caddie Academy—a oneofakind program that provides underprivi­leged female teens who may not have access to caddie programs an opportunit­y to caddie, and upon completion of the program, apply for a full ride to college.

The young females — more than 90 percent of them being minorities — will live together in the Chicago area and caddie daily at participat­ing clubs along Chicago’s North Shore. Those who complete the threeyear program will become eligible to apply for the WGA’s Evans Scholarshi­p, which provides a full, fouryear tuition and housing grant to top universiti­es across the country. Valued at $120,000, 55 Caddie Academy participan­ts have gone on to receive the Evans Scholarshi­p since the program’s inception in 2012.

Girls will begin caddying daily for seven weeks on June 18 at one of 14 participat­ing clubs while living at Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart in Lake Forest, Illinois. Boys will reside at the Northweste­rn Evans Scholarshi­p House in Evanston, Illinois, and caddie at one of four participat­ing clubs.
