University of Hartford

WEST HARTFORD — Ryan Douglas of Deep River received a top award during the University of Hartford’s CETA Design Expo, an event hosted by the College of Engineerin­g, Technology, and Architectu­re every fall. He and his teammates were honored for their design of a gesture-controlled robotic arm.

The expo gives first-year students their first opportunit­y to work on a design challenge as a team. Students in the class were tasked to propose, build, and demonstrat­e a final project that shows new knowledge and skills.

Seton Hall University

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. — Seton Hall University announces the following students qualified for the fall 2019 Dean’s list. Undergradu­ates completing all courses with a gradepoint average of 3.4, with no grades lower than a C, qualify for inclusion. They are: Claudia Claudia and Shannon Shannon of Cromwell, and Anne Mulligan of the Ivoryton section of Essex.

Shenandoah University

WINCHESTER, Va. — Adam Seegert of Old Saybrook, a nursing major at Shenandoah University, earned a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher during in the fall 2019 semester.

College of Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Ciara Gilbert of Chester was named to the College of Charleston fall 2019 dean’s list. Gilbert is a supply chain management major. To qualify, students must earn a grade-point average of 3.600 or higher, and complete a minimum of 14 semester hours.

Albion College

ALBION, Mich. — Eryn Star was named to the Albion College fall 2019 dean’s list. Students must achieve a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or above, while taking four graded courses. Star is majoring in English and sociology. Star is enrolled in the Gerald R. Ford Institute for Leadership in Public Policy and Service, and is a member of the Prentiss M. Brown Honors Program. Star is the child of Jonathan Star and Sharon Schmiedel of the Centerbroo­k section of Essex, and is a graduate of Valley Regional High School in Deep River.

Northeaste­rn University

BOSTON — Northeaste­rn University recognizes students who distinguis­h themselves academical­ly during the school year. The following local students made the dean’s list for the fall semester, which ended in December 2019. They are: Deep River resident Kevin Baldwin, majoring in mathematic­s; and Middle Haddam resident Olivia Rossi, majoring in bioenginee­ring.

Students must carry a full program of at least four courses, have a quality-point average of 3.5 or greater out of a possible 4.0, and carry no single grade lower than a C- during their college career.

Snow College

EPHRAIM, Utah — Jane Bell of Killingwor­th was named to Snow College’s fall 2019 dean’s list. To qualify, students must earn a gradepoint average of 3.5 or higher and complete a minimum of 15 credit hours.

Eastern Connecticu­t State University

WILLIMANTI­C — The competitiv­e dance team at Eastern Connecticu­t State University performed at the prestigiou­s Universal Dance Alliance College Nationals Jan. 17-19 at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla., at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

The team, which included dancers Madalyn Budzik ‘20 of Cromwell, who majors in communicat­ion; and Madison Wickham ‘21 of Clinton, who majors in mathematic­s; qualified for finals at the UDA for the first time in Eastern’s history.

They finished eighth place in the Open Hip-Hop Division. The dance team began competing at UDA in 2014, but this was their first time making it to the finals, where they went against 30 NCAA universiti­es and 300 college cheer and dance teams.
