Walker named to WBCA team

- By Doug Bonjour

UConn junior Megan Walker was selected to the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s All-America team on Thursday.

Walker led the Huskies in scoring (19.7), was second in rebounding (8.4) and third in assists (2.8), before declaring early for the WNBA Draft last month.

Previously, Walker was named First Team AllAmerican by both the Associated Press and U.S. Basketball Writers Association. The 6-foot-1 forward from Chesterfield, Va., is the 23rd Husky to earn WBCA AllAmerican honors. At least one UConn player has made the list every season since 2007-08.

Selection to the WBCA team will qualify Walker for the distinguished Huskies of Honor program.

Walker is joined on the All-America team by Texas

A&M’s Chennedy Carter, Baylor’s Lauren Cox, Iowa’s Kathleen Doyle, Louisville’s Dana Evans, South Carolina’s Tyasha Harris and Arizona’s Aari McDonald, as well as the Oregon trio of Sabrina Ionescu, Ruthy Hebard and Satou Sabally.

UConn senior point guard Crystal Dangerfield and sophomores Olivia Nelson-Ododa and Christyn

Williams received honorable mention.

In addition to being a No. 1 scorer, Walker ranked eighth nationally in threepoint shooting at 45.1 percent this past season. She had 20 or more points 18 times and was named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Year, along with the Most Outstanding Player of the conference tournament.

Walker is expected to be taken within the first few picks of the April 17th

WNBA Draft. In fact, ESPN projected her to go as early as No. 5 in its latest mock draft. Meanwhile, Dangerfield, who averaged 14.9 points and a team-high 3.9 assists, landed at No. 12, the final pick of the first round.

UConn went 29-3 and won a seventh straight AAC championship in 2019-20 prior to the NCAA tournament being canceled due to the coronavirus outbreak.
