2-alarm fire heavily damages local building

MIDDLETOWN — A two-alarm fire heavily damaged a commercial building on Main Street Extenstion early Sunday morning.

The building, which was vacant, was once the home of the Car Quest Auto Parts store. The building is across the street from Walgreen’s.

When firefighte­rs arrived they found parts of the two-story, brick building fully involved.

The fire, reported around 3:30 a.m., quickly escalated into a two-alarm blaze.

At one point, the intensity of the blaze caused firefighte­rs to be pulled back from the building in defensive attack.

The fire department said “at approximat­ely 3:20 Sunday morning, Engine 1 and 2 along with Truck 1, responded to South Fire District for the reported structure fire in a commercial structure on Main Street Extension. Engine 1 arrived on scene to find a well involved fire.

There were no injuries to civilians or firefighte­rs.

The fire remains under investigat­ion by the South District Fire Marshal’s Office and Middletown Police Department.

Crews from South District, Middletown and Westfield worked most of the night to bring the fire under control. Firefighte­rs from Durham, Portland and Haddam provided mutual assistance.

The property at 311 Main Street Extension has been listed for sale a price of $645,000. An earlier listing for the property had a listing price of $795,000.

The building, constructe­d in 1936, has 7,252 square feet of space. The building sits on .13 of an acre.
