‘Shanties & Sails’ concert series begins June 9
ESSEX — Shanties & Sails, the Connecticut River Museum’s latest public concert series, kicks off June 9.
On Tuesday evenings in June, shanty and sea-song musicians come to our North Deck for a free onehour live performance.
Attendees have the option to continue the fun by boarding the historic reproduction sailing vessel, the Onrust, for a second hour of sailing and live music on the Connecticut River. Tickets are required.
An important feature of the marine days of the 19th century, sea shanty cadences first developed in the 1400s to help sailors complete their daily chores. Shanties were sung by the sailors to follow the rhythm and pace of each job.
With the generous sponsorship of Prive Swiss Wellness in Essex, our series begins on June 9 with Rick Spencer and Dawn Indermuehle. On June 16, the Museum welcomes Marc Bernier, and on June 23, the sounds of the Johnson Girls Band will fill the air along the river’s edge.
The series concludes with a performance on June 30 with Geoff Kaufman.
Join us as we celebrate the wonder and beauty of the Connecticut River through stories and songs. Seating on board the Onrust is limited. Those interested are encouraged to visit ctrivermuseum.org (shop/programs/onrust) and reserve a spot today. A cash bar will be open for our guests.
The Connecticut River Museum is located on the Essex waterfront at 67 Main Street in Essex and is open daily from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
The museum, located in the historic Steamboat Dock building, offers exhibits and programs about the history and environment of the Connecticut River. For a full listing of Museum programs go to www.ctrivermuseum.org or call 860767-8269.
