Dr. Frederick William Hartung, Sr., of Madison, CT and Cotuit, MA, passed away peacefully on August 6th at Novant Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was born on September 20th, 1936 in Waterbury, CT. Fred was married to the love of his life Carol Anne (Burke) Hartung for 59 years. He was the son of the late Paul and Anna (Oellien) Hartung. Fred had two siblings: a brother Paul Hartung and a sister the late Gerda Hartung. He was the father to Paul, Peter and Todd Hartung and Tobi Plume. Fred also had five grandchildren: Carrie Anne Plume, Jack, Isabella, Emma and Alexander Hartung. Fred was a lifelong learner with a passion for education, reading and teaching. He served in the United States Marine Corps before he went on to earn his undergraduate, masters and doctoral degrees. Fred spent his life as an educator and professor of psychology at Mohegan Community College (now Three Rivers Community College) in Norwich, CT. He instilled a love of learning, thinking and reflecting to everyone he met. Fred saw the best in people and the potential they often did not realize they had. Fred loved literature, art, music and theatre. A lifelong season ticket holder at The Yale Repertory Theater he especially had a love and appreciation for theater. His fishing boat, Azdak, was named after a character by the German playwright Bertolt Brecht. Fred’s thirst for knowledge and passion for life included a love for travel with his beloved wife. To celebrate their 25th anniversary they traveled to Africa. On their 50th anniversary they traveled to China. Above his love for the arts, reading, fishing and travel, Fred held a special place in his heart for his family. He devoted his life to his wife and children and his smile was never so big as when he would speak of them or simply watch and observe them. Fred had an understanding and appreciation for love and life like no other. He saw the beauty that life offered through his wife Carol and their children and grandchildren.
