Greenwich’s Frettys earn CSGA father-son crown

Jackson and Steve Fretty combined to shoot a 1-under-par 71 at Tumble Brook Country Club in Bloomfield to win the 84th State Father-Son Championsh­ip on Wednesday.

Jackson Fretty is a former standout golfer at Greenwich High now playing at Princeton University. His dad, Steve, is a 7.9 handicap at Greenwich CC. In this championsh­ip, both partners hit drives, then play alternate shot for the remainder of the hole.

There was a three-way tie for second place at evenpar 72, which included the defending champions, Ben and Brian Jessen. Also finishing second were Len and Greg Horvath from Manchester CC and Jason and Matt Burrill of Rockledge CC.

MID-AMATEUR

Mid-Amateur beginning Monday at Madison CC.

The low 36 players from Monday will advance to the final 36 holes being played Tuesday. Day tees off at 11:10 a.m. with a pair of New Haven CC golfers: Ben Conroy, a past State Amateur champion, and Mike Kennedy.

CSGA Executive Director Mike Moraghan (CC of Waterbury) is competing (10:50 a.m.) in addition to former State Amateur winner Cody Paladino (1:30 p.m.).

CT SECTION PGA AWARDS

The Tradition Golf Club at Oak Lane in Woodbridge is this year’s recipient of the Walter Lowell Distinguis­hed Service Public Golf Course Award, the Connecticu­t Section PGA announced on Friday afternoon.

Among the other recipients include: Ian Marshall (IAMGOLF LLC), the golf profession­al of the year; Jeff Beale, the Farms CC in Wallingfor­d, the Assistant

Profession­al of the Year; Jon Wilson from the Golf Center at Lyman Orchards GC in Middlefiel­d, the Player Developmen­t Award; and William Street, the head pro at Whitney Farms GC in Monroe, the Public Merchandis­er of the Year.

All of the recipients are expected to receive their awards at a ceremony slated for Oct. 3 at Tumble Brook CC.
