College students graduate, earn honors

James Madison University

HARRISONBU­RG, Va. — James Madison University welcomed the class of 2024 to campus recently. Students include Sarah Denver of Killingwor­th, health sciences; Mary O’Brien of Essex, health services administra­tion; and Autumn Tewksbury of Portland, intelligen­ce analysis.

Roger Williams University

BRISTOL, R.I. — Select students have been named to the spring 2020 dean’s list at Roger Williams University. Full-time students who complete 12 or more credits per semester and earn a grade-point average of 3.4 or higher are honored.

They are: Carl Anderson, Nicholas Panico and Megan Barnes of Old Saybrook, Leah Brownell and Madison Demaio of East Haddam, Kyrie McCormick of Higganum and Jacob Sapia of Middlefiel­d.

SPRINGFIEL­D, Mass. — Western New England University announce the 2020 College of Arts & Sciences Senior Awards. Students receiving awards are selected for a significan­t contributi­on to the department.

The local student is Brooke L. Townsend of Portland, Honor Graduate in Criminal Justice Award. This award is presented to a graduating senior with a grade-point average of 3.50 or higher, and the highest major GPA with no transfer credits in criminal justice.

Hofstra University

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — Hofstra University has released the spring 2020 provost’s list, which recognizes students who have earned a perfect 4.0 gradepoint average.

BURLINGTON, Vt. — The following students have been named to the Champlain College dean’s list for achieving a gradepoint average of 3.5 or higher in the spring 2020 semester.

Boston University

BOSTON — Boston University awarded academic degrees in May 2020. Locals who graduated are: Deep River residents Emma R. Shiring, bachelor of science in hospitalit­y administra­tion, cum laude; Michael L. Baker, bachelor of arts in economics and environmen­tal analysis and policy, magna cum laude, and a master of arts in energy and environmen­t.

Also, Iris O. Simone, East Hampton, was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester. Each school and college has their own criterion, but students generally must attain a 3.5 gradepoint average (on a 4.0 scale), or be in the top 30 percent of their class, as well as a full course load as a full-time student.

Area students are: Alexander Stephan of Durham, and Middletown residents Alexis E. Curtin and Yiqing Li.

Purchase College

PURCHASE, N.Y. — Emily Alexander of Cromwell was named to Purchase College’s dean’s list for the spring 2020 semester. Alexander is studying photograph­y.

To be eligible, students must carry a semester grade-point average of 3.5 for bachelor of arts and bachelor of science programs, and 3.75 for bachelor of fine arts and bachelor of music performanc­e programs. They must take a minimum of 12 credits.

Bates College

LEWISTON, Maine — The following students have been named to the dean’s list at Bates College for the winter semester ending in April 2020. This is a distinctio­n earned by students whose cumulative grade-point average is 3.8 or higher.

Jon Farrell of Middletown, child of Michael P. Farrell and Eleanor C. Farrell of Middletown, is a 2016 graduate of Xavier High School. Farrell earned his degree after majoring in English and minoring in religious studies.

Jarod Castro of Killingwor­th, child of Chris A. Castro of Durham and Kristen M. Castro of Killingwor­th, is a 2018 graduate of Kent School. Castro is majoring in environmen­tal studies and economics.

Oaklea Elfstrom of East Haddam, child of Bruce E. Elfstrom and Katharine B. Elfstrom of East Haddam, is a 2016 graduate of Williams School. Elfstrom is majoring in environmen­tal studies and undeclared, and minoring in theater.

Cameron Johnson of Deep River, child of Kurt W. Johnson and Stacia Oakes Johnson of Deep River, is a 2017 graduate of Valley Regional High School. Johnson is majoring in psychology and minoring in education and Spanish.

Tom Hennessey of Middletown, child of Robert J. Hennessey and Ruth E. Veleta of Middletown, is a 2017 graduate of Watkinson School. He is majoring in psychology and minoring in philosophy.

Jared O’Hare of Middletown, child of Kevin M. O’Hare and Judith B. O’Hare of Middletown, is a 2019 graduate of Avon Old Farms School.

Cam Davis-Kania of Middlefiel­d, child of David J. Kania of Middlefiel­d and Robert Davis and Greg Conyers of West Hartford, is a 2019 graduate of Cheshire Academy.

University of North Georgia

DAHLONEGA, Ga. — Trent Erik Ferguson of Killingwor­th made the summer 2020 dean’s list at the University of North Georgia for achieving at least a 3.5 grade-point average, carrying 12 or more credit hours in one semester and having no grade lower than B.
