Quinnipiac reports 9 new COVID cases

HAMDEN — Quinnipiac University officials reported nine new cases of COVID-19 over the weekend.

“All 9 cases are off-campus students, and the majority of new cases are contacts of previously confirmed positive cases,” Quinnipiac officials said in a message posted to the school’s website.

The university recorded 22 new cases in the past week, according to the Quinnipiac’s public dashboard, a positivity rate of 1 percent out of 1,911 tests.

So far the school has recorded 48 case of the disease this semester.

The new cases at Quinnipiac come as other colleges and universiti­es that saw surges in new cases earlier this month have seen their numbers drop.

The University of New Haven in West Haven and Trinity College in Hartford have both dropped their COVID-19 alert status to green. Both schools suspended in-person classes earlier this month amid surging caseloads.

But as of Sunday, UNH officials reported 18 new cases in the past seven days, and 24 active cases (one of them a school employee). As of Sunday, 16 students were in isolation on campus, along with seven off-campus. Ninety students were quarantini­ng on-campus and 50 more were quarantini­ng off-campus.

On Thursday, UNH officials announced the school was planning to return to in-person instructio­n on Monday. Residentia­l students were required to produce a negative test, and commuter students were strongly encouraged to be tested before returning to campus, according to a message from the university.

Trinity College officials meanwhile reported just two active cases, both among students, as of Monday. That was down from 11 new positive cases two weeks ago. The school returned to in-person classes last Wednesday.

On Friday, the school announced 15 students had been kicked out of university housing for COVID-19 violations— including 14 students who went out to a bar.

Fairfield University, meanwhile, has dropped its COVID-19 alert to yellow, and reported no new cases on Sunday. The university currently has 42 active positive cases— 36 among students, six among faculty and staff.

The university has recorded a total of 329 COVID-19 cases this semester.

Southern Connecticu­t State University in New Haven reported five new cases last week— three among commuters, one among residentia­l students and one among interns and athletes. The university has reported 52 cases so far this semester.

The University of Hartford in West Hartford reported 18 new cases last week, up from just one new case the week before. The school currently lists 18 cases as active.

Wesleyan University in Middletown reported one new case – a student – last week. The school currently has one active case among students, along with three among employees.

Sacred Heart University in Fairfield reported two new cases among on-campus students and three new cases among students off-campus as of Monday. The new infections bring the school’s total number of active cases to 72— 35 on-campus students, 36 off-campus, and one case among employees.

Central Connecticu­t State University in New Britain reported one new case on Saturday, a residentia­l student. Four people there are in quarantine as of Sunday, with one person in isolation, according to the school’s dashboard.

Connecticu­t College in New London reported one new positive case among employees last week. The school currently reports three active cases, all among employees.

Western Connecticu­t State University in Danbury reported five new cases last week. Three were among commuter students, the other two among employees.
