Old Saybrook and Middletown cancel rest of their schedules

Old Saybrook High has canceled the last two games of the boys soccer team’s regular season.

The Rams’ two road games Tuesday at Coginchaug and Friday at Cromwell will not be played, according to school athletic director Brendan Saunders, who did not elaborate as to why this is the case.

“I am not at liberty to share the details of our current situation,” Saunders said in an email. “Our regular season is finished and we are making every attempt to participate in the Shoreline Conference Tournament. I hope to have more information as soon as possible.”

While Old Saybrook maintains hope for the postseason experience, the same cannot be said for the unbeaten Middletown boys soccer team. That team, along with the other fall sports teams for the Blue Dragons, had their seasons concluded once the school went to remote learning beginning Monday. That was due to both a teacher and a student testing positive for COVID-19.

The Middletown Press reported that number increased to six students and two staff members. Contract tracing identified 82 students and 21 staff members, according to the Press. Middletown High will remain in remote learning until Nov. 16.

Elisha De Jesus, Middletown’s athletic director, said in an email to student-athletes and their families that Middletown will not be able to take part in the Central Connecticut Conference’s postseason experience, scheduled to begin next week.

“We understand how heartbreaking this news is, but the health and safety of our students, teachers, administrators, and families will always be our highest priority,” De Jesus said.

The boys soccer team finished the season 8-0-1.

The Shoreline Conference boys soccer tournament is scheduled to begin next Monday, Nov. 9. Old Saybrook shared a co-championship with Morgan last season.

The Rams currently stand at 7-2. First-year head coach Steve Waters is just two victories shy of becoming the CIAC’s all-time winningest boys soccer coach.

Waters compiled a 557-8951 reford during his long tenure at Farmington. Former E.O. Smith coach John Blomstrann stepped down after this past season with 565 victories.
