Quinnipiac’s Chenery MAAC Rookie of Week
The MAAC named Quinnipiac freshman wing Tymu Chenery its men’s basketball Rookie of the Week on Monday. Chenery, from Philadelphia, scored 11 points and had six rebounds off the bench in his college debut, an 84-66 Bobcats win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday. He also had two blocks and a steal. Quinnipiac was set to host Maine on Sunday, but that game was canceled after the Black Bears paused athletics last week because of COVID-19 on campus. The Bobcats resume play Wednesday against Drexel in the Basketball Hall of Fame TipOff Tournament at Mohegan Sun Arena. Quinnipiac announced on Twitter that it has added a non-conference home game against New Hampshire on Sunday at 2 p.m.
WORLD TRAVELER
Spencer Knight of Darien is one step closer to an official return to the World Junior Championship. USA Hockey named him to its preliminary roster on Monday for the upcoming 2021 tournament. Knight, a sophomore goalie at Boston College, has been part of Team USA for the past two tournaments; he didn’t play in 2019 but was the United States’ No. 1 goalie a year ago. The Florida Panthers made Knight the 13th-overall pick in the 2019 NHL draft. USA Hockey will announce the final roster on Dec. 13. The tournament runs Dec. 25-Jan. 5 in Edmonton, Alberta.
POLL POSITION
For the second week in a row, without playing a game, Quinnipiac rose one spot in the U.S. College Hockey Online Division I men’s hockey poll. The Bobcats rank 11th in both the USCHO poll and the USA Today/USA Hockey poll, both released on Monday. The pandemic has messed with the Bobcats’ early schedule; they’re not scheduled to play until Dec. 14. UConn (0-1-1) and Sacred Heart (0-0-0) are among teams also receiving votes in the USCHO top-20 poll. The North Dakota men, who also haven’t played yet, top both polls. The Quinnipiac (0-0) and UConn (0-1-1) women are two of the only three teams also receiving votes outside the USCHO’s women’s hockey top 10; Wisconsin (1-1-0) leads that poll, with the USA Today/USA Hockey poll due out Tuesday.
