KEEP AN EYE ON

Passing Summitt: With his next victory, UConn coach Geno Auriemma will pass Tennessee legend Pat Summitt for second all-time, with 1,099 wins. Stanford’s Tara VanDerveer, also currently active, holds the record at 1,105.

“It’s hard to believe,” Auriemma now in his 36th season, said Monday on a Zoom call. “If you had put me back in time and dropped me down here in 1985 again and said, ‘Hey, try to do this,’ I would say it’s not doable. That’s what it means to me, to look back and go, ‘It’s really not doable.’”

And yet?

“In the next breath I can say, ‘But we did it, and we’re not finished yet.’”

For starters: Auriemma switched up his starting lineup in UConn’s last game, Jan. 9 against Providence, replacing sophomore Anna Makurat with freshman Aaliyah Edwards. However, he wasn’t sure if he would necessarily stick with it. More than a week later, it seems that’s still the case.

“I don’t know that I’m sold one way or another on the starting lineup other than the obvious four,” Auriemma said. “I don’t know that there’s going to be a time where … I feel like, ‘Hey, this is the best five for us to start a game,’ I don’t know what that is yet.”

One of those four is junior Evina Westbrook, who’s averaging 10.0 points and 4.9 rebounds per game.

“Whoever comes into the game, whether you start or you’re coming off the bench, whether you get in the second half,” she said, “everyone has a job to do.”

History lesson: This will be the first meeting between UConn and Butler. The teams were supposed to play Dec. 15, but their game was postponed due to COVID-19 issues within the Bulldogs’ program.
