Victim of courthouse shooting in Bridgeport denied bail

- By Peter Yankowski

A federal judge Tuesday ordered Trevon Wright, who was shot and wounded a year ago outside the Bridgeport Superior Courthouse, to remain in custody pending trial, citing a continued threat to the community over a smoldering “gang war” in Bridgeport.

Wright, 19, and three others were indicted last week on federal racketeering and murder charges.

The indictment alleges all four were members of the East End gang, which along with the PT Barnum, East Side and 150 gangs “were aligned against” two other rival gangs in Bridgeport — the Original North End and Greene Homes Boyz.

Wright and another member of the group are alleged to have killed Myreke Kenion during a shooting at the Greene Homes housing complex on Jan. 26 of last year. Days later, Wright was shot at the Bridgeport courthouse on Golden Hill Street, a shooting police said was linked to Kenion’s death. The indictment also alleges Wright was involved in two other shootings in 2019.

Calling the conflict “some of the most dangerous activity we’ve seen in Bridgeport,” U.S. Magistrate Judge William Garfinkel said he was ordering Wright to be detained out of concern he would still be involved in the conflict — despite the shooting at the courthouse leaving him partly immobilized.

Garfinkel expressed sympathy for Wright’s mother, who appeared on the video conference bond hearing and at one point covered her face in her hands as the judge ordered him to remain in custody.

Wright, wearing an orange jumpsuit in a detention facility, remained seated throughout the hearing and only spoke at the beginning of the proceeding to answer Garfinkel that he was comfortable proceeding with the hearing over Zoom.
