Feds: CT man who threatened Trump is sentenced

- By Tara O'Neill

A man who was last living in New Haven has been sentenced to spend another nine years and two months in federal prison for making hoax threats, including a threat to kill then-President Donald Trump, according to federal prosecutors.

Gary Joseph Gravelle, also known as Roland Prejean, 53, with a last known address in New Haven, was sentenced by Judge Kari A. Dooley in Bridgeport to serve a 110-month prison sentence, followed by three years of supervised release.

In July 2013, Gravelle was sentenced to 70 months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release, for mailing what authorities said were numerous threatening letters in 2010. He was released in 2015.

He sent the latest round of threatening letters in September 2018, while under federal supervised release from his prior conviction, authorities said. When he pleaded guilty to the seven federal offenses, he also admitted to violating his terms of release, authorities said.

Last January, Gravelle pleaded guilty to five counts of maliciously conveying false information about an explosive, one count related to the sending of hoax Anthrax letters and one count of making threats against the president.

On Wednesday, federal prosecutors said Dooley sentenced Gravelle to 86 months for his actions in 2018, and a consecutive 24 months for the supervised release violation.

Officials said he made threats to various mental health providers and facilities in New Haven, probation officers, a U.S. district court judge, an international airport in Vermont, a federal prison in Washington, organizations and religious centers in Connecticut, occupants at a building in Old Saybrook and a credit union in Bristol.

Authorities said he also sent a letter “threatening to kill” Trump.

Some letters Gravelle mailed had a “white powdery substance” inside, authorities said, as well as notes, indicating the substance was Anthrax — a biological agent.

Gravelle was taken into custody on Sept. 8, 2018.
