Several streaks came to an end for Huskies

What happens when winning becomes habit rather than happenstance?

Every loss is dissected. Every mistake scrutinized.

Thursday against No. 19 Arkansas, No. 3 UConn fell for the first time this season and had its 19game winning streak come to an end.

Let’s take a look back at the other “lasts” for the Huskies following their 90-87 defeat in Fayetteville, Ark.

JAN. 17, 2017: SURRENDERED 13 3-POINTERS

Arkansas’ 13 3-pointers tied a single-game record against UConn. It had happened six times previously, most recently on Jan. 17, 2017 in a 98-58 victory over Tulsa. Chelsea Dungee (4-of-5) and Amber Ramirez (5-of-10) combined for nine of the Razorbacks’ treys.

MARCH, 30, 2001: GAVE UP 90 POINTS IN REGULATION

How’s this for an indictment on UConn’s defense? The 90 points were the most the Huskies had allowed in regulation since a 90-75 loss to Notre Dame in the 2001 Final Four.

FEB. 18, 2012: LOST TO AN OPPONENT RANKED OUTSIDE THE TOP 10

Shenneika Smith’s 3-pointer catapulted unranked St. John’s to a 57-56 victory over UConn on Feb. 18, 2012, snapping the Huskies’ 99-game home court winning streak. The Huskies hadn’t lost to a team outside the Top 10 of the Associated Press poll since then.

APRIL 3, 2011: OPPONENT SHOT 51 PERCENT

Again, back to that usually dominant UConn defense. … Arkansas shot 51 percent from the field. It matches the highest mark since Notre Dame’s 72-63 victory over the Huskies in the 2011 national semifinals.

FEB. 18, 2000: ALLOWED AT LEAST 35 POINTS TO AN OPPOSING PLAYER

Dungee’s 37 points were the most scored by an opposing player since Syracuse’s Beth Record dropped 35 in a 100-74 UConn victory on Feb. 18, 2000. Holy Cross’ Amy O’Brien still holds the single-game record of 38 in 1997.

MARCH 7 AND 17, 1993: LOSING STREAK

Some streaks defy logic, but this might be the Huskies’ most remarkable of all. UConn hasn’t suffered back-to-back losses since the 1992-93 season — a span of 1,004 games. The Huskies were beaten by Providence in the Big East tournament on March 7, 1993, then fell to Louisville in the NCAA tournament.

The Huskies will try to avoid that from happening again when they visit No. 17 DePaul on Sunday. They beat the Blue Demons last month, 75-52, in Storrs.
