MxCC wins $12.5K in grants for merit-based scholarships
MIDDLETOWN — Middlesex Community College has received $12,500 in grant funding from the Gene Haas Foundation, which will contribute to merit-based scholarships.
These will be awarded to precision manufacturing students to cover tuition, books and supplies that students are required to provide, such as personal tooling. The process will be managed by the MxCC Foundation, according to a press release.
“Manufacturing continues to thrive and grow in Connecticut. Scholarships provided by companies like Gene Haas make accessing this educational opportunity available for any student interested in being a part of the industry,” Tracy Ariel, director of the precision manufacturing program, said in a prepared statement.
Middlesex student Elizabeth Moag, a manufacturing machine technology major from Berlin, who earned one of the scholarships last year, is pursuing a career in manufacturing while helping to break barriers for women in the manufacturing and engineering field, the college said.
“I want to show that women are intelligent and strategic, and have what it takes to succeed in the manufacturing world,” Moag said in the statement.
Precision manufacturing certification equips students with the necessary hands-on experience and foundational knowledge to qualify for entry-level positions as machine operators and quality control inspectors, according to MxCC. Students are taught both conventional machining techniques and computer numerical control machining techniques.
Students who complete the program earn nationally recognized credentials and a 36-credit certificate that can be applied toward an associate degree in Technology Studies-Industrial Technology Option, the news release said.
