Sunday brought up to 10 inches of snow
Road crews were working to clear snow after the state weathered a winter storm on Sunday.
The storm entered the state at approximately 7 a.m. and moved northeast, clearing most of the state by 6 p.m. that evening.
The National Weather Service is reporting snow accumulation totals between 4 inches and 10 inches, depending on the area.
Falling toward the center of that spectrum was Greenwich. In Old Greenwich, Andree Pruett was out around noon Sunday, shoveling a couple of inches of snow from her driveway.
“I know it’s not much snow, but I want to get it before it gets matted down,” Pruett said. “So if I get it now, I stand half a chance.”
The NWS issued a storm warning for portions of northeast New Jersey, southern Connecticut and southeast New York, where 6 inches of snow were expected, as well as for portions of southern Connecticut and southeast New York, where between 5 and 8 inches were expected.
New Haven County, as well as lower Fairfield County, saw snowfall rates around 1 inch per hour during the late morning and early afternoon.
In Bridgeport, the NWS reported more than 7 inches had fallen as of 5 p.m. Sunday. Meanwhile, in North Haven, the federal agency reported that 8 inches fell.
In New Haven, Emergency Management Director Rick Fontana said the city had towed 180 cars and ticketed 201 more, for violations of snow emergency rules. Officials said 5 to 6 inches had accumulated by late afternoon.
Fontana said the number of tickets issued exceeds the number of cars towed, because “sometimes we just can’t enough tow trucks.”
“These parking bans are in place as a public safety measure,” he said, noting it would remain in place through 3 p.m. Monday. “It’s the only way we can get these street clear.”
“It looks like we are getting a little bit more than we hoped for,” Fontana said about the quantity of snowfall Sunday. “The difficult driving conditions remain in the city.”
He said work Sunday focused on plowing the new snow to keep driving lanes open.
The NWS advisories listed lighter predictions in other areas, such as northern Fairfield County, and that came to be true. It later reported towns such as Danbury to have seen just more than five inches in snow accumulation.
