Barbara Anne Nichols, 76, of Hamden, CT passed away on February 11, 2021 at Yale New Haven Hospital from cardiac arrest and metastatic ovarian cancer. Born in New Haven, CT, Barbara was raised in both New Haven and Hamden, CT. She is survived by her sister, Rosemary Nichols of Branford, CT, her brother, Mark Nichols of New Haven, CT, her nieces Carmella Nichols and Katherine Nichols of New Haven, CT, and her sister-in-law Denise Botto of New Haven, CT. Barbara is also survived by her many cousins and her “adopted” sisters, Anne Marie Menta of Hamden, CT and Elyse Greenberg of Shelton, CT. Barbara attended St. John the Baptist Catholic School as well as St. Mary’s High School. During her teenage years, she developed mental illness but despite this challenge, Barbara went on to complete her Associates Degree in Early Childhood at South Central Community College. Against all odds, starting at age 45 she lived independen­tly, supporting herself by working at Stop & Shop. During her life Barbara traveled with family in the U.S. and abroad. She had an incredible memory, a good sense of humor and a love of animals. Once you were Barbara’s friend, she never forgot you, your family, your pets and asked about them frequently. She had many friends in both the staff and fellow residents at Hamden Health Care where she lived for the last several years. Barbara will be cremated and a Memorial Mass as well as Celebratio­n of Life will be done when pandemic restrictio­ns are lifted. In lieu of flowers, Barbara’s family is asking that donations be made to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) – www.nami.org or the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC) – ovarian.org .
