Sacred Heart drops Duquesne

FAIRFIELD — Malik Grant carried it 34 times for 186 yards and two touchdowns and Sacred Heart controlled the second half en route to a 31-13 win over Duquesne on Saturday.

The Pioneers (5-3, 3-1 Northeast Conference) took a 14-13 lead in the third quarter when Grant went up the middle for a 6-yard touchdown. He capped the scoring with a 1-yard plunge in the fourth.

The Dukes (4-2, 2-1), who entered as the last unbeaten team in the league, led 13-7 at the half but did not pick up a first down in the second half and had 24 yards of offense.

Sacred Heart had 17 of its 28 first downs in the second half and 213 of its 416 yards of total offense.

Garrett Owens ran for 113 yards and scored Duquesne’s only touchdown.

LIU 30, CCSU 13: At New Britain, Camden Orth passed for two touchdowns, Paul Inzerillo made three field goals and Long Island University beat Central Connecticut for its first victory of the season.

CCSU pulled within 23-13 with 8:13 left in the fourth quarter, but LIU answered with a 12-play, 76-yard drive capped by Kevin Wilson’s 23-yard run. The drive took six-plus minutes off the clock.

Orth was 14 of 26 for 146 yards for Long Island (1-5, 1-2 Northeast Conference). Wilson finished with 32 yards on four carries.

Long Island turned it over on its first two drives, but took a 10-6 lead in the second quarter on Orth’s 8-yard connection with Derick Eugene.

Inzerillo’s long of 47 yards gave LIU a 16-6 lead, and Orth’s 3-yard touchdown pass to Owen Glascoe made it 23-6 late in the third.

Shon Mitchell was 20 of 38 for 201 yards with one touchdown and one interception for Central Connecticut (1-6, 1-2). Tyshaun James caught six passes for 113 yards and a score.

Massachusetts Maritime Academy 22, Western Connecticut State 20: At Danbury, Julian Ferguson caught 13 passes for 209 yards and scored a fouryard touchdown, but WestConn came up short at the Westside Athletic Complex.

Quarterback John Giller completed 21 of 36 passes for 319 yards, but was intercepted twice for WCSU, which fell to 3-5 (2-4 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference),

George Lampros hit five field goals for MMA (4-3, 3-2 MSCAC), including the go-ahead on with 2:44 remaining.

New Haven 42, Stonehill 20: At Easton, Mass., Connor Degenhardt threw for three touchdowns and rushed for two more as the Chargers dominated in a Northeast-10 win.

Kasi Hazzard got UNH (6-1, 5-0) on the board first, returning a blocked punt 10 yards for a score. Degenhardt then hit receivers Kevin Foelsch (2 TDs) and Javon Turner for a trio of scores before adding a pair of rushing touchdowns of his own in the the third quarter to make it 42-0 New

Haven.

Stonehill fell to 5-2 (3-2 NE-10).

SCSU 43, Franklin Pierce 24: At Rindge, N.H., Tylon Papallo became the first Southern Connecticut State player to pass for a touchdown, run for a touchdown and also catch a touchdown in the same game as the Owls’ rolled to an NE-10 win.

Papallo had four receptions for 127 yards including a 67-yard touchdown, while also running for a pair of touchdowns and passing to Izaiah Sanders for a score for Southern (4-4, 3-3 NE-10).

Sanders matched a career-best with nine catches for a season-best 124 yards and his second two-touchdown game of the season. Freshman quarterback Marc Reali completed 26 passes for 378 yards and two touchdowns.

Franklin Pierce fell to 0-7 (0-5 NE-10).

Trinity 35, Colby 12: At Watervillle, Maine, despite trailing by its largest deficit of the season at halftime, the Bantams put up 35 unanswered second-half points for its sixth-straight win.

The Bantams (6-0) travel to Williams College next Saturday to take on the unbeat Ephs. The loss dropped Colby to 2-4.

Wesleyan 24, Middlebury 0: At Middletown, David Estevez ran for 140 yards on 22 carries including two touchdowns and completed 11-of-22 passes for 125 yards to lead the unbeaten Cardinals to their New England Small College Athletic Conference win.
