Spring event moved to Friday

- By Paul Doyle

UConn has moved its Blue/White spring football showcase from Thursday to Friday, allowing every player on the roster to participate.

The school said in a statement that the move was made to “better accommodate academic obligations of student-athletes.”

The event will be held at 7 p.m. at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium at Rizza Performance Center in Storrs. Gates will open at 5:30 p.m. and is free to attend, although fans must claim a ticket to attend. The general public and students can claim tickets online.

There will be concessions available, and the first 1,500 students will receive a free UConn football t-shirt. There will also be a live performance from the band Capital View.

The event is being billed as an on-field practice as opposed to a spring game.

It will be the first view of UConn under first-year coach Jim Mora, who was hired in November.

Randy Brochu and, Adam Giardino will serve as sideline reporters, conducting interviews with players and coaches during the open practice.

Fans are encouraged to park in the South Garage. Jim Calhoun Way will be closed from Hillside Road to the entrance of South Garage from 5-7 p.m. Jim Calhoun Way will also be closed from the Hilltop Rear Gate, near Separatist Drive, to Alumni Drive, from 5 p.m. until the end of the event.

The UConn baseball team is facing Villanova at 6 p.m. Due to the proximity of Elliot Ballpark to Morrone Stadium, the baseball game will also be free of charge.
