MIDDLETOWN — Five outstanding Middletown High School students were awarded the 2021 Ida M. Masselli Middlesex County NAACP Branch Scholarship in September.
They are Michael A. Allyene, Jayla Amin, Mikayla A. Chalmers, Oumouibanouna (Ounmou) Diallo and Jewel L. Lucien. Each recipient received a $2,000 scholarship to support his/her educational pursuit at a post-secondary school, according to a press release.
These graduates were recognized in a virtual celebration in late 2021.
Allyene will be going to LaSalle University, Amin and Chalmers, Howard University; Diallo, Florida University, and Jewel l. Lucien, Spellman University.
Community Health Center President/CEO Mark Masselli has had a longstanding relationship with the Middlesex County NAACP, through individuals such as Reba Moses, Idella Howell, Willie and Sharon Walton and Patti Vassi, the news release said.
“His philanthropic work in his mother's and family's names in our community is so important. Mark not only walks the walk, but talks the talks. Mark clearly demonstrates the importance and commitment for forging change in our community and society by challenging established systematic systems,” the NAACP said.
Ida Masselli played a leading role in the local 1960 Kennedy for President Campaign, and she was an early and active supporter of the civil rights movement. She instilled a keen sense of commitment to others and equality to all in her family, which is truly represented in the establishment of the endowment fund, the statement said.
The local branch is accepting applications until May 16 for its 2022 awards. For an application, contact Patricia A. Alston, first vice president and interim education chairwoman, at patalston@comcast.com, a school counselor or go to middlesexctnaacp.org.
