Middletown upended by Windsor

- By Carl Adamec

MIDDLETOWN — It was the Middletown football team’s homecoming game, but it was Windsor that made itself comfortable.

Shaun Adams ran for 134 yards and two touchdowns Friday night as Windsor handled the rain here like a playoff-contending team should in posting a 27-7 win over Middletown in a CCC Tier II game at Rosek-Skubel Stadium.

“It was pretty tough conditions,” Adams said. “But we work hard as a team and we practice when we have these kind of conditions. You get used to it.

“But I can’t do anything without my O-line. I talk to them. If they make a mistake, they tell me they’ve got the next play and they do it.” Windsor (3-1 overall, 2-0 CCC Tier II) never trailed as it bounced back from a loss to New Canaan.

The rain did slow down Windsor’s speed game but Adams and John Manning (98 total yards) kept the offense moving behind its offensive line.”

“They’re different kinds of backs,” Windsor coach Rob Fleeting said. “John has a lot of moves and Sean is just downhill. And we needed a downhill runner tonight.”

Windsor was turned away in its first trip to the red zone, but followed up with a six-play, 68yard drive to take the lead. An AJ Robinson pass to Cashmire Lewis got Windsor into Middletown territory. Adams raced 22 yards to the Middletown 2-yard-line to set up his own touchdown run on the next play. Matthew Nesheiwat added the extra point.

A fumble by Blue Dragons’ quarterback Colin Skene on the next possession was recovered by Windsor’s Eli Fangiullo at the visitor’s 43. Three players on thirdand-13, Robinson tossed the ball to Manning on a well-executed screen pass with Manning doing the rest for a 60-yard score. Chase Royal’s two-point conversion made it 15-0 with 5:38 to go in the second quarter.

Middletown got to the Windsor 27 before stalling and it remained 15-0 at halftime.

Windsor iced it with an 83-yard drive that took 12 plays and 7:20. A fourth-down pass from Robinson to Chase went for 30 yards to the Middletown 10. Two plays later, Maxim Copeland scored from nine yards away to make it 21-0

with 59 seconds left in the third quarter. The Blue Dragons got on the board on a 29-yard touchdown pass from Skene to Rayjon Buttram with 2:07 remaining. Adams scored for Windsor on a

47-yard run 22 seconds later to account for the final score.

“I like the way our guys filled in because we’re dealing with injuries,” Fleeting said. “But injuries
