Ceres police on Friday shot and killed a man who had threatened family members with a knife and then fled, the department said.

The man had not been identified as of late Saturday morning. Details also were not available on how many shots were fired and by how many officers.

A news release Friday said officers were dispatched at 11:40 a.m. to Dirk Court, which runs south from Roeding Road just west of Ninth Street. The reporting person said a man there had brandished a knife at his family, the release said.

It provided these further details:

Officers determined that the man had an arrest warrant for multiple charges in Modesto, including assault with a deadly weapon and domestic violence.

The man ran through the yards of several homes after officers arrived. Officers called in a K-9 unit from the Modesto Police Department to try to track him.

At about 12:10 p.m., the suspect was found hiding in a vehicle at a business on the 3400 block of Sixth Street. The suspect was shot as officers tried to arrest him.

Officers and medical personnel began treating the man, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

One officer was transported to a local hospital with an injury that was not considered life-threatening. No other officers or residents were injured.

The shooting is under investigation by the Ceres Police Department, including whether the use-offorce policy was followed. The Stanislaus County District’s Attorney’s Office also will assess whether the shooting was justified.
