The 1996 graduate is the all-time leading scorer in Konkrete Kids history with 2,237 points and helped her team win 73 games over her final three years. She was a threetime league MVP — earning East Penn Conference honors as a sophomore — an all-state selection and The Morning Call’s Player of the Year.

As a senior in 1995-96, Newhard’s team lost to Central Catholic in the district final but bounced back to win four straight games in the state tournament in winning the Eastern title before losing to Altoona in the state finals.

A Lehigh Valley Basketball Hall of Fame inductee in 2006, Newhard went on to be a three-year captain at La Salle.

“I want to savor every Laura Newhard performance,” thenNorthampton coach Ellen Malone said after watching her score a career-high 37 points in a win over Stroudsburg. “Frankly, I don’t know if I’ll ever coach an athlete with her capabilities. She’s one special athlete.”

Central Catholic coach Mike Kopp said Newhard was one of the best players he has ever coached against.

“She was really unstoppable at times,” Kopp said.
